The critical stage of language acquisition is 0-3, during this time children's brains will learn to decode and process language, and they will learn to produce language to communicate their basic wants and needs. Language is how one learns in life, if you are unable to understand or use language, learning will be much more difficult. I work with language delayed preschoolers, and most have delays with social skills, and academic skills in addition to expressive and/or receptive language abilities. I don't know exactly what you're looking for from your question, but language is at the core of learning. Most children with learning disabilities have some sort of language delay as well.

Language acquisition is part of the child's development. You might want to check with your State's education department, or the U.S. Goverment Department of Education. They have lots of information on child development, mush is low cost or free. There are also lots of books on childhood development and milestones in the library. Your local school district, local school and some community organizations also have information on child development milestones and also ways to enhance their development.

Good luck!

Yeah first of all the child should be able to communicate in his mother tongue. One must not force any child to learn other language if he is not interested.

I took two semesters on this topic in college... can you be a little more specific? Do you need some book recommendations? Use ADD DETAILS feature, and I'm happy to help if I have a better idea of what you're looking for. :-)

If the child shows interest -- go right ahead. If he/she however is forced to do it, they will only end up hating it, and learning should be fun. Good Luck!
