My torty/tabby mix cat, Lily, likes to sit on paper and shred it. It's not annoying to me but I have never seen a cat do this. She doesn't do it often just once in awhile. She just gets this determined look in her eyes and goes at it. I've joked around that I should get her a job with the CIA or something. :)
She is fixed, indoors, and declawed, and about 3 1/2 years old. I adopted her from a shelter early last year and she is a loving cat and loves my children too. :)

My tabby cat has recently discovered the joys of shredding kleenex... she went crazy with a half a box all over the living room one day!
My friend had a cat who LOVED tin foil balls, he would go nuts with those things but never worked with anyother cat I met.
I guess they are like us, all individuals.

Ha ha ha ha... naughty kitty! The reason why your cat shreds paper is: 1. He discovered that he can do so 2. He discovered that it is FUN to do so 3. Its the thing he does when he is bored (bored cats become destructive cats) Here's what cat behavioralists recommend about toilet-paper shredding: Five ways to prevent cats from playing with toilet paper: 1. Hang the roll so that the paper hangs down between the roll and the wall rather than over the top of the roll. If the cat knows how to roll it either way, then you can get a cover that rests on top of the toilet paper and this will work. 2. You can make your own by taking the cardboard core from an empty roll and slitting it lengthwise and fitting it over the roll. 3. You can balance a small paper cup full of water on top of the roll. 4. Instead of a cup of water, try an aluminum can with pennies. 5. If you are unwilling or unable to use the cover, then close the door to the bathroom. As to shredding importnat documanet, I strongly recommend that you keep such papers safe in a drawer or a box where the cat cannot get to them. Seriously... even if your cat has been "weaned" from his pepr-shredding "thing" there is no telling when he might want to shred paper agains "just for the heck of it." One last note: give your cat plenty of toys to play with and regular times of play with you so he does not get bored. There are many things you can do and provide to enrich his life indoors so he does not become bored and destructive.

i haven't met a cat with this habit, but my dog is a paper shredding maniac. if she sees a tissue sticking out of my pocket, or paper sitting on the coffee table, she will calmly walk over and then faster than i would think possible, she dives for the paper and runs to the landing of the stairs (her shredding spot) and gets to work. she doesn't eat much of it, just loves to rip it up.

I have an 8 year old Diluted Calico. She loves to shread paper and does a good job with brown paper bags too. I don't know why she does it, but she has been doing it all her life.

You don't want to see what my 4 have done on the occassion that someone didn't close the bathroom door at night. NINE toilet rolls shredded, we were knee deep in TP throughout the house. They all slept well that day though...

Our cats like to lay on paper but has never shreaded. We do however buy these corrugated scratching pads/boxes at the pet store and they go to town on those.

Yes, one of my cats loves to shred paper. I have christened him Oscar Shrederov! I guess he thinks he is helping me to keep my papers tidy.
