I think I may have found my OCD. I can't let go of a letter for ages when I put it in the slot. I keep taking it back out and checking just in case my wallet or money is in my hand - which it isn't of course.
It's f*cking mental but I do find it amusing because I thought I was quite sane. Why???

No its just normal when your letting go of something you know you cant have back. Psychologically, you know that the instant you let go of that letter, you cant get it back to make changes and if there was anything in your hands at the time, you'd loose that too. It's just our way of safeguarding ourself. Not everyone does it.

Hi, sorry to hear your problem. Dont worry you ARE sane, some of us just have the tendancy for OCD triggers. You are quite right that it seems it is OCD. Next time you go to post a letter, take your time in preparing it in a calm manner. When you are at the post office / box, take a big breath, look once at the letter to check it is sealed, making sure nothing else is in your hand then quickly shove the letter in the post and walk away. Try not to think about the letter being in the post or you will want to go back to get it out or it will play on your mind too much. Clear your mind and think of something funny or eat a choc bar, anything to distract you from the letter.I time you will then be pleased with your ability to beat the OCD, if you can not do it then ask someone else to post it for you, but you know that would be cheating. I hope this helps you.

I am not an expert on the subject of OCD, but I have had a fair bit of education on the matter. Experiences with people have made the matter more personal. OCD is very common. It is the result of taking too much responsibilty for things. It may cause you to exaggerate things that many pass off as just a fleeting thought; that is, you may believe that thinking about doing something bad is the same as doing it. If it effects you significantly, you may want to see a psychiatrist. If this is the case, I hope that either you can get it paid for by the some company or government plan or you can pay for it yourself.

A habit maybe - just make sure you are prepared before you post the letter in the box and just let the letter drop, don't think about it. I think a case being parinoid may have some effects however this doesn't sound like a case of OCD as far as I've seen.

hey, I have a similar habit. When I am dropping a cheque in the collection box at the bank, i can't really let go easily. I keep checking it again and again. And about the wallet...I have to check my wallet (or tickets, if i am travelling) a hundred times in a day. Hahahaha...I know its funny..but not mental. Such OCDs are pretty safe. I have many more like counting and arranging, but its harmless.

That's funny, I'm a little OCD about mailing letters too. If I put one in a mailbox with a hinged door I can never walk away until I double check that it fell down the slot and didn't "stick" to the part it slides down on. You're not alone!

You've got a fear of losing more than £/$50 when you post letters
thinking you pulled your wallet out at the same time as the letter.
If you haven't, just post the letter and leave it at that. Are you on a low income or a well paid job? Low income sector tend to fear losing money a bit more, even at gambling.

I'm usually happy to get rid of my letters and bills, but I guess your habit could be a good one if you frequently forget the pay the postage or put a stamp on the letter, or if you tend to drop stuff down the mail slot that doesn't belong (like a wallet).

I do that all the time with everything, not only the mail. Ive seen me check a letter several times before my fingers can put it in that slot, then let go. I know what you mean by worrying you mail something else with it.

Sounds retentive, but it's being thorough.....don't worry, it does'nt mean your bonkers, just that you have to be more focused.
