My dog has the same exact problem. he is a working dog, so he gets bored easily. I actually consulted a dog behaviorist, and she provided several affordable options. Kongs work very well, because they keep the dog busy for a pretty long time. Also, she recommended filling old cereal boxes and milk jugs with a little bit of dog kibble to entertain your dog. Rawhide is good too, but it gets boring after awhile. She recommends putting down 1 item per 30 mins that you are gone. If you are gone for an 8hr work day, that means you have to put down 16 items! However, not all of us can afford to buy a bunch of kongs at $10 each, so there is a more affordable way to do it. Here's what I've tried: First, I went to the grocery store and asked for beef bones. They were really, really cheap. Then, I took the beef bones home, emptied out the marrow, boiled them, cleaned them off, and put them in the freezer. It takes a little while, but it's worth the money you save. Each night, you can fill the bones with dog kibble, plug the ends with peanut butter or something so the kibble doesn't fall out, freeze it, and then put it down in the morning before you leave for work. Also, my dog likes to have a rawhide bone or 2 for variety.
This is just a recommendation, I hope things work out for you and your dog.

I get my dogs the roasted bones from Farm and Fleet. They are real, quite large, and it takes a long time to chew them up. I don't recommend the rawhide bones, as they can get real soft and lodge in their throat. I had that happen to one of my dogs! I literally had to pull it out of her throat. No more rawhide for me! Also, turn on the tv. Sounds silly, but my dogs actually watch the tv. The background noise helps keep them calm.

My puppy never liked those Kongs (with the treats inside). She keeps busy with rawhide bones and chews (compressed is great because it's harder than regular rawhide so it takes a longer time for your dog to chew through it). You can kill two birds with one stone, because the rawhide chews will keep his teeth clean and it will develop good chewing habits.

Just get him one of those bones that take a very long time to chew up, and leave the tv or radio on for him. The sound of a voice will keep him company. Also, try giving him something of yours that has your scent on it, but make sure it's something that he can tear up, or chew on and you won't need it back.

My dog loved KONGS! The bounce and jump and you can put a dog treat in them.

I would suggest a kong (filled with goodies) or a large marrow bone.
