I love pitbulls, I have one. She is the most caring gentle dog I've ever seen, She even loves cats. Of course when we're outside playing and ppl walk by with their dogs they are immediately scared of her or rather scared for their dog. It's a huge stereo type. She sleeps with my kids, they lay on her, they used to ride her and I trust her 200%. It's all in how you raise them period. I don't think nothing in them prones them to automatically turn fierce. It's all in their owner. My dog would lay down her life for me or my children and loves us unconditionally. When ppl walk by the house , or if shes in car and sees people she doesnt automatically growl or want to fight. only times she has is when she thought someone was breaking in the house via the sliding door. Pitbulls if raised with love are wonderful dogs :)

I LOVE THEM !!!!!! they are wonderful, loving, loyal dogs....the media blames them for attacks without telling you the whole story...was the dog scared, provoked, mistreated, were there other circumstances surrounding the attack...one example..2 pits attacked a child riding on the aunts back!!!! what they dont tell you is that the dogs didnt know the kid,the child was screaming and swinging its arms around on the aunts back...all the dogs knew was someone was attacking mom!!!! go help her !!!!! now..you tell me who's fault was that?...hmmm...the aunt should have NEVER gone running thru the yard with a child on her back with dogs that were NOT exposed to children .....the media kinda forgot those details !!! so just remember there are two sides to every story...there are just as many good deeds done by pitbulls but none make the news because they arent sensational enough !!!! pitbulls save kids from burning buildings, from being abducted, from other animals....please dont judge this breed on a few bad examples

Of course pitbulls are an aggressive breed of dogs. They were bred for fighting other dogs. But this does not mean that pitbulls do not make good pets. I have many friends and co-workers that own pitbulls and have never encountered a mean one. Training goes a long way with a more difficult breed. Rotts and dobermans use to share the same reputation. But to say that a pitbull is no more aggressive than any other breed of dog is just foolish.

Some times you can get a pittbull that is not trust worthy just like any other breed of dog, but the reason I like pitbulls is because my aunt has an over grown pittbull, he is bigger than normal, and the way she brought him up and trained him was she never once laid a hand on him or came at him in a nasty pissed off voice , she was always calm with him and when he misbehaved she made him sit in the corner, and because she did this she has one amazing pittbull, Chance is now 11 yrs old , has never been nasty or mean to anyone and he is one of the smartest dogs I have seen in a long time , So my point is " A dog is only as smart as its owner!!!!!!

I think it is possible to be a responsible pitbull owner. I have one now and he is the best dog I have ever owned. However, due to the sterotype, I take all precautions neccesary to insure the safety of MY DOG from ignorant people. Yes, pitbulls were initially trained to subdue large livestock and eventually to fight other dogs. Does any know that during these dog fights the owners used to stand in the pit with the dogs and could stop the fight at any time? Pitbulls who showed aggression towards humans were not used for fighting because they could not be trusted in the pit. People who breed fighting dogs now though are idiots and don't take such care. My dog is a show bred, not a street pitbull (he is American Staffordshire Terrior) and I love him to death. I take him to the human society once a year for a temperment evaluation just to have it on record that he is not vicious. For those of you who think pitbulls should not be with kids, do you know that less than 50 years ago pitbulls were actually chosen as babysitters for kids because of their high pain tolerence. Kids could stomp, sit, ride, pull, tug on these poor pups and the dog wouldn't hurt the child.
What needs to happen is street breeding of pitbulls needs to STOP and be monitored so that people stop producing uber-aggressive dogs (of any breed really).
I know a rott who saved a kids life who was being attacked by a big nuetered black lab. I know of a baby who was mauled to death by a corgi. I also know of a pitbull who helped a girl from being attacked by a dalmation.
I never leave my dog out in the yard alone for fear he will be stolen, I never have my dog out of the house off of a sturdy leash, I have an in home trainer come and work with us for 3 hours a month to have his temperment on record, the humane society has a temperment record of him, I have my vet keep a temperment record for him also, animal control knows I own him as I voluntarily registered him with the city, and I am active in pitbull rescues all over the US. I do this all for my dog. He is my best friend and I love him. I guess I believe in giving all beings a chance before judging and I'm glad I did with him.
Oh yea, i've also been involved with a study that checked out the dogs associated with the "pitbull attacks" on the news and something like 64% of these "pitbulls" were not pits at all. Something like 20% of the dogs were shepards. I'll have to find the results of that study to be able to quote it.

My family was attacked by a pit bull, however, my wife had a .357 in her purse (yes she is trained and knows weapons) and was able to kill the dog before it hurt my family. But it had attacked and killed three other dogs, hurt 2 other people and was coming toward my three young children when it happened. That said, I have met many pit bulls that are the nicest dogs anyone would ever want. The dog that did the attack had a nut for an owner and never let the dog off a chain, did not walk it, and teased it all the time so it would be "a tough guard dog". In other words a very bad owner. It is the owner not the dog that I worry about when it comes to pit bulls.

In recent years, pit bulls have gained more than just a foothold in the public awareness. Unscrupulous breeding and negative media attention have resulted in many apartment complexes, neighborhoods and even counties imposing bans on the breed, citing them as "inherently dangerous" to the public.
But did you know that pit bulls, despite the fact that they were originally bred to fight with each other, were also bred to be trustworthy and friendly to people? These dogs actually earned the nickname "nursemaid's dog," because they were so reliable with young children.
Today, however, the breed often attracts the worst kind of dog owners--those who are only interested in them for fighting or protection. It's a shame what has happened to this loyal and affectionate breed-but as the pit bull population has increased so rapidly, shelters are now struggling to deal with an overflow of image-plagued, hard-to-place dogs. And despite its illegality, people are still training and breeding pit bulls to participate in dog fights in cities and towns across the country.

Well if people wasn't so set on making animals mean and vicious we wouldn't have this problem. I love pitts!!!! i have a boxer, a black chow/pit, and two basenjis and they are all very loving. Ya dont get me wrong the has been some attacks by pitts on the news but hey that's peoples fault dont blame the dog they were just brought up that way. My pit chow mix he plays rough but he dont mean it and as soon as u tell him no he stops and licks your face. But when a child comes over he just lays on the ground and waits for his belly rub or hair pulled what every it is as long as he is getting attention. My boxer she was raise to protect the barn from coons and such. Cause of grain and the horses... But any one could stick their face right in her bowl while shes eating and she would just step back and wait patiently. I have never seen a mean pit where i live. and there is a lot of crime and drug deals from my area.

No media brainwashing & no, I haven't been attacked, but to me, all dogs, cats, pet pigs & pets in general are a waste of air, space & resources more appropriately used for other humans.
But back to pitbulls ~
Ugly doesn't begin to describe it! Phugly is getting closer but a dead pitbull is a safe pitbull!
Why? I'm just an enlightened human with no tolerance for stupidity. There are thousands of instances of 'family' pets mauling people, just in my lifetime. I don't have statistics or how many children have been killed but I'm not too anxious to delve into so much grief. The fact that it happens so very frequently is outrageous! What a ridiculous circumstance! [Like you, with all your uncapitalized questions.]

I think that having a pitbull is not bad but there is somethinkgs that you have to worry about if you own a pittbull make sure you don't chain them up because if you do they will get aggressive and they will turn on you. Also make sure you give the dog enought attention. I know this by my own experience.
