Awakeatdawn, yes I was worried he might have to do the whole GED thing. He is 23 and Id like to get him in a vocational type program. He has dyslexia and some learning issues so having to take the GED would be a real pain for him.

Since you are in Texas, there is a fantastic seminar coming up all about homeschooling in high school. They cover topics like transcripts, college admissions, so on and so forth. The website is "homeschoolforhighschool.com"
Check it out and see if they will have one near you. Everyone I know that attended last year said it was well worth it, I'm planning on going this year.

Pell Grants and similar grants are given to students in approved colleges and universities that show promise and/or financial need. Homeschooling or not.

It is important that you/he fill out the FAFSA online as soon as possible. There are deadlines. You can also see the financial aid office of the school and get help with the form or with other applications for grants, scholarships or loans.

My daughter received a Pell grant in VA after being homeschooled, without the GED. For Florida she had to do the GED even though she had been in college and was on the president's list...and was transferring her credits. (Go figure)

I recieved a pell grant to attend college. Home schooling didn't disqualify me from recieving many available grants and scholarships. The one headache I did endure, was that even though my ACT was a 29 I was required to get a GED to validate my home-school diploma. (gotta love the system) This is at the discreation of individual institutions, so it may not be an issue for you. Any college he's considering should have a financial aid office that can answer your questions. Home schooling is much more widely done now than it was 10 years ago, and I imagine they will already have a policy in place for such situations. Good Luck to you both.

If I'm not mistaken, Pell Grants are need-based and should not be affected by the fact that he was homeschooled. Check with the financial aid office of the college he plans on attending.
