My son is at University. He has an income of £150. I am ill at the moment and on benefits. Because he is now 18 they don't pay anything for him. He lives at home. Everything is done for him. He uses food from the house to supplement his lunch while at Uni.
How much should I charge him for rent? Can't afford not to charge him anything as they want me now to pay an additional £10 for rent and council tax.

I suggested £35 and he wants to pay £40 but I just want some input. Don't want to overcharge cos I love him...I want him to get on.

If he wants to pay £40 let him,hes getting a good deal he would never ever be able to rent a place for that price,i know how you feel though i had my daughter and her boyfriend living with me and i didn't like to take anything from them but in the end i had too as they were eating me out of house and home and watching TV all night, leaving lights on and heating on all day.You have to be practical and I'm sure you son can see this.also if you still wanting to charge him £35 why not take the 40 and save the extra for him without him knowing and come xmas or whenever he needs something you can give it him,im sure he'll be pleased.

If you love your son - then do charge him £40 a week or you could even charge £50. My parents charged me £40 a week and that was in 1987! It helped me learn to budget so when I left home to stand on my own two feet - I didn't find it so difficult to cope.

if he gets £150, i would DEMAND £50 of it, my mum did to me, then it tought me a few lessons in life too, i live on my own now and gotta pay £100 a week rent for my flat, i get £300 a week,so its 1/3 of my wages, you should take 1/3 of his which is £50. if he is grateful he will not argu, if he aint, he needs to be taught a hard lesson about life and demand it off him or tell him to get his own place then. its only fair. or £40 and he does some tiyding up.

a normal uni rent would be £50 a week and then food and bills would cost an extra £25 on top. i would charge him £50 it's a fare amount and he's still getting a good deal.

(i only wish i could have saved that much each week while at uni).

Rent should never be more than 40% of your income so that would be about 60.

its just my personal opinion but i don't think you should charge children anything they did not ask to be born so why when they reach a certain age should they pay us they should be brought up to know the value of money and put some in a saving account each week not pay you gosh that sounded harsh sorry just ask him to give what he can afford

I would charge £50 a week he still has 100 to play with and it would cover all his food, water, gas, blah blah it is still a much cheaper option for him. good luck

I could never charge my own kid rent. Especially if he was 18, going to school and being a good kid.

Why not pool your resources? You could both work out how much money you have a week to live on and put it together.
