Mature "men" dont' use chat-up lines, only immature boys who are looking for one thing use them.
But having said that, I think women have made it hard for guys. It's typically the man that has to make the move on a woman, and if you don't really know much about someone if you've just met them what are you supposed to talk about? So usually they start with a compliment or joke to break the ice and lighten the mood.
Imagine if men didn't approach women and it was the other way around. Would women come out with cliche conversation starters?

Most guys I know over the age of 21 don't use chat up lines. But the ones that do have nothing interesting to say.

OK, I will have to turn in my man card for this one. I will let you in on a secerate. Most men, though we would deny it till we die, are "scared to death" of women for the simple fact that while we are looking for a date, we are so worried of being denied. That is where the lines come into play. They are more or less used to "feel out" the situation and the woman to tell what there reaction would be before the question of date comes up. For most men, being brushed off or denied a date is a big hit on our ego. That is the reason, as far as I can tell. Though I don't have to worry about it anymore.

Cuz they're insecure about who they are, usually. But we also gotta give the guys a break. Society -and women in general -have made it really hard for a guy to even approach a woman, so who could blame them for having to resort to a line?

i dont need them - my dad gave me the best bit of advice when i was a teenager he said son - you dont pull the bird - they pull you!
I just strike up conversation and b polite - if they like me they talk back and smile, i ask for a telephone number and bing there you go - if they say no, theyre not interested - i move to the next fish haha
