canker sores are viral so unfortunately there is no cure-and yes they hurt terribly ( i get them on occasion)
stress usually brings these on and in some people-poor hygiene can as well.....
to treat them:
try using anbesol liquid-apply with a q-tip directly to the sore itself-this will help numb it for a while and relieve the pain
keep your mouth as clean as possible-flossing and brushing after eating anything. if u are unable to brush or floss-rinse your mouth out really good with warm water.
i found that taking ibuprofen around the clock worked great for stopping the pain. take 200-400mg every 6 hours but no more than 1200mg in 24 hours
avoid eating or drinking things that are too acidic ( fruits, orange juice, etc) or anything spicy-these will irritate the sore and make it hurt worse....
expect them to last about 10-14 days.....

As mentioned, OTC meds, and keeping them clean will help with the healing process. I prefer salt water and peroxide over mouth wash. In some of the research I have done I found toothpaste containing Soduim Lauryl Sulfate to be a big no-no. Most toothpaste have this, but if you look around you can find some that doesn't (Rembrant generally doesn't). This has made a big difference in the frequency of sores I get. Also your family doctor can prescribe "Mary's Magic Mouthwash". This is a bunch of stuff mixed together which includes anti-biotic, antihistimine and soothing agents. This stuff tastes like crap, but it helps with the pain. Hope this helps.

You can get canker sore meds from any drug store. Should be in the mouth wash and toothpaste sections. I use salt water on mine. It HURTS LIKE HELL at first, but I think the salt shrinks them or something. Ya might try Listerine or another less potent antiseptic mout wash.
Some more info at site below.
