in some toys are us stores they have little 10p games and items like little cars, puzzles and bouncy balls etc..
he then gets a mini present every day and you haven't spent too much.
(if they don't sell them near you, most independent newsagents or toy stores will have something similar)
hope this helps.

This is a tricky one it will all depend on how big the advent calender pockets are?
Early learning often have a good selection of small toys often they have a special range designed for Xmas.
You could do an equal mix of chocs and small gifts like bubbles small plastic animals, Cars Etc.
Toys R us do a great range and the will be quite cheap the party range can also be good.

What about promises- to go to his favourite park, to make his favourite dinner, to visit his nana, to play football in the garden or stuff like that! or put in a pot of glitter and a promise to make christmas cards in, something that you can do with him fairly immediately after you've opened it or he'l lose the excitement but some of these things can actually be free!
bouncy ball, sweets, crayons, a bulb to plant (you might have to look for a really small one!), that's quite hard, actually for such a young child), good luck, I hope you both have fun!!

Little lego men could be fun, if they are suitable for a 3 year old. Nice to see someone not just buying chocolates!
