I'm not sure that I can explain the technology of either. I do know the the LCD has a longer service life then Plasma, and a better picture.
Plasmas tend to "ghost" or "shadow" as the screen brightness fades.
This leaves funny images,on the screen, and that becomes distracting.

Plasma produces a better picture. They last just as long as LCD. The only rating for longevity is for half life or half brightness of the screen. They with both outlive the electronics inside. Unless you know anyone who has had a tv for 30 years. Burn in is not an issue becuse once you put motion back on the screen it goes away. It is very hard to permantly burn in a plamsa. Differnece in a nut shell. Plasma is a gas. alot like a neon sign. The gas is excited and it produces a clolored light. Imagine a million little neon light. Lcd uses a light bar to behind liquid filament. The filament changes color with an an electric charge. The light passing threw and changes color. That produces your image. But the light is always on so black is very difficult to reproduce. LCDs have an issue with dark seens. Plasma does not because the pixel can be off no color.
For tv
Plasma is still the best and the do cost less when comparing same size tvs.
LCDs are good for people who leave their video games on all day and use it as a computer screen. Static image
LCDs are generally small but they have been growing but cost alot so they are usually 40 or 46 inches and below
Plasma is 37 inches and above. Panasonic is the only company i'm aware of that makes a 37 inch the rest make 42 and above.

The biggest thing that makes plama outshine is the ability to make an sd image still look good. Most Plasmas have good video processors while it seems that the LCD makers put nothing into the LCD. Every LCD seems to look rather poor when you put in a dvd or watch regular tv. Think about this because while you will only want to watch HDTV most things are still in SD standard definition. you can compare the best LCD probably a sony XBR to an middle of the road plasma(Samsung toshiba, panasonic) on SD and the Plasma will always win. Try it in a store.

Plasmas can be made bigger for a lesser manufacturing cost. So they sell cheaper than LCDs of the same size for any given size, they may also have marginally better contrast ratios.
Apart from that about all's downhill for plasma, they're cursed with ghosting(and those nasty imprints of logos if you're a news channel addict) and don't have the superior resolution of LCDs.
LCDs also last longer.

LCD is more like a calculator screen, where plasma is totally different. Even though plasma may look better, LCD is far more dependable and less likely to have break downs.
