She didn't like the long version of her first name.

Some names from other cultures can sound funny to our ears - I once had a student - a lovely person - called Li Ying Fuc!

The funniest names, I think, are those that display what New Scientist calls nominative determinism; They are totally suited to the persons job or some feature, like a Turf Accountant called Robin Bastard. I knew a web designer called Iona Page!

Oh, I've just remembered my statistics lecturer - Dr Richard 'Call me Dick' Head!

I'm a fan of what New Scientist calls Nominative Determinism - where people have names that suit their occupations.

When I was a kid in hospital, I had an orthopaedist called Dr Bohne (pronounced Bone). My Rheumatologist was called Dr Lim.

Apparently, in the 40s there was a socialite's daughter called Ima Hogg.

A German guy named Otto. Not strange until you find out his last name is Junker (pronounced Youngker). We used to tell him he should work in a chop-shop. My brother and sister and I used to get bored after school, and randomly look in the phonebook for people to prank. One day, -I kid you not- we found a guy whose last name was King, first name Drain. We thought it was so hilarious because the brand of garbage disposal my mom had in her sink was called "Drain King". Never met him, though- just prank-called his *** every day 'till we got bored. I once met an entire family with the last name "Butts", but that's pretty common. (Unless the oldest son of the family marries an Indian woman named Dragi, and she takes his last name! That actually DID happen, but I never met her, just saw the wedding announcement...) Hope you get a few laughs outta these!

Now that you mention Connor McLeod...

My sister once meet a young woman who was carrying a baby. When she asked about the baby´s name, the woman said: "David Highlander". Seriously.

My sister said then: "Well, which one of you both is the fan?"

"My husband" the young woman grumbled. End of conversation.

My mother was also a godmother for a poor child that was to be called Leslie Diana (like Lady Diana). For a girl living in rural Mexico, that is terrible.
