I am suffering tingling and a heavy feeling in left side of my body and I'm being told that it could be an infection - de-myelination. Is this true and what can be done about it?/

It is when the insulating coating on the long nerves deteriorates

Myelination is the process by which a select set of axons (specialized information passing processes extended from nerve cells) are wrapped with an insulating sheath by some specialized cells in the nervous system. The presence of myelination around an axon generally means that it can conduct neural impulses much more quickly than non-myelinated axons. In the case of "de-myelination" this insulating wrap can become damaged or removed from the axons. This can come about as a result of a number of different conditions including some infections. If the myelination is lost on some of your sensory nerves, the result will be a diminished state of sensation to things like heat, light touch, etc.

Depending upon the source of the de-myelination there are several different things that need to be considered. For a thorough exam and determination you would be best served by seeing a neurologist.

myelin is a kind of speed booster for neural signals...

its a bit difficult to explain in a few words... a neural signal can be imagined as an electrical charge that wanders along the nerve... or more precisely hops along it from one spot to another, called ion pumps... this is achieved by ions of sodium and potassium(?) being actively transported through the cells membrane, producing an imbalance of negatively and positively charged ions, and thus an electric field. this field triggers the same process to be performed at the next ion pump, thus transporting the signal along the nerve...

myelin now is a coating around the nerve, insulating most of the pumps from the process, leaving only one in a hundred or so free, which speeds up the signal by the same factor.
well... of course it is much more complicated than this in reality, but i think you got the general picture, and also see why de-myelination is a bad thing. the most prominent syndrome of de-myelination is probably multiple sclerosis, a terminal illness. it is no infection though, but brought about by a genetic defect, as far as i know... and i have not heard abuot any infection that has this effect. but i am no doc either.
i suggest you go and see one about this. and dont forget to specifically ask about de-myelination.

Hi there.
My understanding is that the myelin is a sheath that surrounds the nerves, like insulation around an electrical cable. De-myelinisation is sometimes a side effect of infection. It wil effect yuor nerves similar to an electrical short circuit, causing the tingling. It should self repair in time.

"The Jews" is an impossible demographic to define so your question is impossible to answer. Do you mean a Jew as religion, heritage, race, or tradition? Because each of the are indefinable. Genetic samples taken from those who were once considered of the "Jewish race" showed that they were in fact Caucasian. In fact there is no genetic marker that links "Jews" of any origin, be they: Russian, Middle Eastern, European, Ethiopian, African, African American, etc. As to religion, tradition, and heritage, well they are varied even more so. What it appears you are attempting to do with this question is to label anyone who make a criticism about "Israel" antisemitic or a racist. I will admit I have read some questions and answers that were racist against Jews (these were always promptly deleted) and that antisemitism exists. However, the majority of questions and answers you speak of are critical of "Israel" or "Zionism". To criticize Israel and/or Zionism is not racist or antisemitic. It is not racist because their is no Israeli "race" or Zionist "Race". It is not antisemitic because many, if not most Israelis are secular and many, if not most religious Jews are anti Zionism. If the government or nation of Israel commits war crimes, ethnic cleansing, and abuses of human rights (which they most CERTAINLY do) then they are open to criticism without a copout. As far as being racist with asking questions I'd like to draw your attention to two instances of your own: First: You listed in your additional details "The Civil Rights Movement" and "The NAACP" as "horrible things". That is most certainly racist on YOUR part. And second: You wrote "I read someone say something interesting. he said, "no single country in the world is in danger because of the Jews living there. The different situation is with Muslims, specially with Arabs in South France". You find this interesting? I don't find racism interesting.

De-mylination is the start of Multiple Sclerosis, I know because its happened to me and I have rote a book on it. Its called The Enemy Within and t6ells of the start of MS, a desease of the sentral nervious system. Go see your doctor before you get too upset.

there are many causes of demyelination. definitely see a neurologist as soon as possible to find the cause and get the appropriate treatment.
