Shalom to everyone who responded. Yiddish is a dying language and its a pity because its so expressive. My zeide used to speak it and one of my uncles but my generation and the next know very little of it.

mrsgavanrossem I had forgotten about Leo's books and I will try find some of them. Thanks for your enthusuiastic response to my question. All I can say now is "Oy Vay"!

Do you need them in actual Yiddish? or will semi-translated do? 'Cos I can't help you if you need Yiddish, but there are several brilliant books of sayings and translations; the best were written by Leo Rosten, who has one big book called The Joys of Yiddish - highly recommended - and if you can locate any of his Hyman Kaplan books you'll fall out of bed laughing (they're short stories recounting the troubles of a chap teaching English to European Jewish immigrants to the USA - they had to pass a language test - and Hyman Kaplan had the most wonderful ways of declining adjectives, for example 'Good - Better - High Cless.'

My favourite Yiddish word - from living in Nw York in the 1960s - is 'flablungent,' indicating someone running around like a headless chicken. And two favourite sayings:

Rabbi Zusya said that when he went to Heaven to meet his God, God would not ask him why he had not been Moses, or Elijah ... but would ask why he had not been Zusya;

and I think this one is also from the same source, and is one in the eye for St. Paul and the Pope ... that when he got to Heaven God would call him to account for all the bountiful and beautiful richnesses of this world that he had *not* taken the opportunity to enjoy.
