In terms of its versatility, overall quality and pricepoint you really cant beat the Epson 4490. It retails around $250 with a $50 mail in rebate. I use this scanner to scan my 6cmx6cm negatives, and have had wonderful results with it. It also works quite well with 35mm slides. Though you would be better off with a dedicated 35mm film scanner, the price and difference in quality really wouldn't be worth it unless you are a professional. Then again that is sort of hypocritical of me to say considering I am a professional, but for that matter my clients who are not professionals cant tell.

I can recommend the slide/film scanner I use, a Minolta that cost about $800. It has numerous adjustments for getting the most from the slide or you can batch process images that are similar in light & color, which is much quicker.

Visit a local, knowledgable camera dealer. Or go to Pop Photography magazine archives and use their search engine. You can go to ebay and pop the question there under I WANT
