I guess you could call me part of the military community, seeing I am retired now. When I was a child all I did was play war or some kind of military games, GI Joes the whole army thing. So when I was 19, I joined the Army back in 1983 just to give something back to my country.

I joined the Army because I was tired of working two or three jobs, getting no respect and having no future. I wanted to be part of something that would matter, something that would make a difference. I also wanted to prove to myself that I could do it and that I could hang in there when the going got tough. I wanted to belong to a family I could be proud of and have real friends who would stand beside me through thick and thin, not just "work buddies". I also wanted to better myself and finish school. I have done all these things now and have been in for 6 years. I look back on my life before the military and I think joining was the best decision I could have ever made. I am part of something with a future and I get to serve my country and better myself as well. Who could ask for more??

I initially joined for college money. What I gained (aside from great work experience) was so much more. I have a deep level of respect for the principles for which this country was founded on. We don't need to get into what our government is turning into. I have such great respect for any member serving right now, even if we really don't know why we are fighting. In or out of the military, even though we pick on the other services, there a camaraderie there for life. I've noticed you get more respect when people find out you are/were in the military. It also teaches you self-respect and valuable life lessons.

I joined the military to get out of my home town and to get college money. My husband joined because he was messing up in college and partying too much. Not going anywhere in life. I got out after 6 years and he's still going strong at 14 years.

Can you think of a job that provides you with that much responsibility at 18 years old? Being in charge of 5-10 people, 10 million dollars worth of equipment, paid technical training? Most friends that pulled the hourly wage jobs at the same age ended up with a criminal record of some sort.
Many people will say that college is more important. I agree. Education is the most important thing. I went to college and obtained my degree for free while I was in. Oh, did I mention traveling to 38 countries for a week at a time. By the time I was 20 I had been to 17 countries and in charge if 13 people. Did you know that college semesters are condensed into 6-8 weeks and a person can obtain their degree in 2-3 years? ( yes, 4 year degree). How about the SOCNAV (Navy) agreement that requires all classes taken to be transferred to any other college?
OK....I'm done.

It is for the love of your country, Thats why!!! I was in the Marine Corps for 8 years, and I am currently still serving my country by working in Afghanistan. It is that self pride and drive that makes you feel above any other. Its that awesome feeling when they play the national anthem and you can say that i participated in keeping this country what it is. Yes the pay is horrible, the lifestyle is hideous but it is the feeling of self pride to be above the rest. You cant find that any were else in the world. Semper Fi

Mostly selfish reasons. It was peace time, I was a wandering soul. I wanted the training in electronics. Patriotic thoughts were there, but not foremost.
