As valiant says, there are seven continents by most reckonings.

If you are asking in respect of the five rings on the Olympic flag, Baron de Coubertin (founder of the modern Olympic Games) talked about them representing "five parts of the world which now are won over to Olympism and willing to accept healthy competition". It views the Americas as one continent and ignores Antarctica as being basically unpopulated and therefore not represented at the games.

On a geological reckoning, there are seven major tectonic plates, six of which have sigificant continental land masses (Africa, North America, South America, Australia, Antarctica and Eurasia) and the basically aquatic Pacific plate. However, it's fairly arbitrary to ignore for instance the Indian plate.

Huh? There's 7...

North America ; South America ; Asia ; Africa ; Australia ; Europe ; Antarctica

Or are you talking back in the slightly post-Pangea days before they all completely drifted apart?

Europe
America
Africa
Australasia
Asia

The sixth would be Antartica, but as it is not permanantly inhabited it isn't really considered a continent.

North & South America are NOT 2 continents, the continent is called America.

It depends if you actually want to class the world into 5 Continents... Sometimes the world is classified into 3, 4, 5, 6 or even 7 and there are various different groups depending on who you talk to!

e.g:

5 Continents can be:

Antarctica,
America,
Eurasia,
Africa,
Austrailia

or

Antarctica,
South America,
Laurasia,
Africa,
Austrailia
----------------------------------------
6 Continents can be:

Antarctica,
South America,
North America,
Eurasia,
Africa,
Austrailia

or

Antarctica,
America,
Europe,
Asia,
Africa,
Austrailia.
----------------------------------------
However, I personally like to go with the 7 Continent rule:

Antarctica,
South America,
North America,
Eruope,
Asia,
Africa,
Austrailia.
