Open source, as its name implies, means providing the software itself, along with the source code of it, free for distribution, compilation, modification and reuse at no charge or restriction. Its the kind of initiative usually and volunteer work, like the Firefox project, and the famous Apache Foundation.

I personally respect those organization, try to spread the word about them, and support them as much as I can. They provide us free tools instead of expensive ones, with the option to remodify them.

It is nothing but a software package available with the original source files as well as the compiled ones. This facilitates the user to modify as par the needs and requirements the source code, recompile everything and use it! The burning examply for this is Linux.

open source means it is not owned by and can be used by anyone like the code for making web pages.
