kvedlugkasdlkas went into a good bit of detail with it, a very good answer in my opinion.

Wiki actually has a good explanation too. Demonstrations are always best, especially having one put on you so that you can feel what it is like. I would even suggest having someone put you out with it, just so that you aware of the effectiveness of the technique, and what happens/how you feel when you come to.

There are chokes from the front, side, etc. The Rear Naked Choke is exactly that, a choke done from behind the opponent, naked meaning using only your arms, as opposed to using a Gi/shirt.

Let's kind of go with a situational approach to it, and see if I can explain it.

You are in relatively close range to your opponent, (close enough to punch, and/or grab) it is a physical confrontation, blows are being exchanged, etc. Let's say for the sake of this explanation you are right handed, (this technique can be applied using either hand etc)

You want to get to your opponents back, let's go with just a quick and easy technique for that, using both of your arms essentially on his shoulders, using your right arm you push, your left arm pulls, one quick motion, a jerk if you will that turns him around to you. As he comes around, you bring your right arm around his neck, ensuring your forearm is underneath his chin.

You want his chin area just above your elbow. Grab your left bicep with your right hand, and bring your left hand behind his head. Apply pressure by flexing your right arm and making it as tight as possible.

Since you are standing, keep walking backwards, or bring your knee up into his back, shielding him from being to reach back and grab your junk.

Keep holding and squeezing until you hear him snoring, his body goes limp, and/or you feel him begin to convulse.

Let his limp body fall to the ground, and walk away.. taunt, etc.

Depending on the person and how long you have held the choke on him, he will be out from 20 seconds to a minute or two. If left alone, meaning not trying to wake him up, it will take longer. Obviously the longer you hold the choke, the longer he will be out for.

Wait for the snoring or convulsing, not just the body going limp. Some people will go limp out of panic, but not be truly unconscious. The last thing you want is to attempt to choke someone out, scare them half to death, and then let go before they go out. Then they will just think you tried to kill them.

Gotta make them go to sleepy land, surest way is to wait till you feel them convulse. It sounds horrible, but it is the surest way to know.

Keep in mind, unless you are holding this on him for 2 or 3 minutes you are not going to kill that person or cause brain damage. On a calm person it takes about 8 to 12 seconds, on a person who is fighting, maybe 3 to 5.

Hope that helps. It is a highly effective technique, I really suggest going somewhere and learning it first hand under supervision, and not just trying it messing around with your buddies.

i have the same problem against some people so i know where your coming from the first thing, is push your fist into there jaw and try to work that straight down under there chin, theres a nerve there that causes a lot of pain, with it being a distraction there mind switches gears and you can get your hand under the neck the next is the one i usually use, act like your going for it, you get there hands outa the way, bring your arm across there face, but pull it tight to there body and lift it backward, this will cause a gap between there chin and there chest allowing you to slip your free hand in if all else fails, apply a body triangle, get off to a slight angle, grab the side of there head right above the ear and push out with your hips and pull back with your hands its a neck crank by bending there head off so the side, my sensei showed a couple of us it one day just fooling around as an easy transition if you couldnt lock in the choke

SHIMEWAWA (JAPANESE STRANGLE): any time you are behind athe enemy you may seek to emplioy the Japanese strangle to subdue him. This techniques may be applied while standing, sitting (as after a throw) or in the mat. Three main variations are often used.

The rear naked choke is ot a true strangle hold, but one in which the pressure of the forearm is directed against the windpipe. This hold is quite pianful, causing the enmy to struggle more vioelntly. This chole, however, will induce unconsciousness, usually when the strangel is improperly applied.

In the Classical Method, which the left forearm around the enemy throat, striking him on the trachea with the inside edge of the wrist of hand. This action wil cause him to inhale sharply. continue the action until hte crook of the left foreara/elbow lies againt the injured trachea. the left bicep will press against the left side of the enemy neck, while the left froarm will press against the right. clamp thje right [palm behind the enemy skull with the finger tips behind his left ear. This will be used to push him forward ihnto the left elbow. Grip tyour right bicep with your left palm. relax the left arm and push with the right palm. This isnot a punishing hold to the enemy, since he could still breathe if your throat-stirke ahd not damaged the phrenic nerve. Pressure is directed instrad to the sides of the neck, specifically against the caroted artery which collapses in a ribbonlike manner when one inhales. When the supply of blood to the brain is vut off, unconsciousness results in five seconds. If the hold is improperly applied and only one artery is sealed, unconsciousness will begin in ten to fifteen seconds.

The Tel Shia technique is useful should the enemy seek to escape by reaching behind to strike your groin. extend the finger of both hands formiong the shuty with each, then step quickly bakc with the right leg and pull him down. This action will dislocate the skull from the spinal column resulting in instant death.

Hope that helps.

in regards to your question...

basically, there are alot of ways/positions to apply the rear naked. no, you do not need to bring him to the ground to apply the hold. your opponent can be standing and you can be at his back but the hold can still be applied.

all rear naked chokes are essentially the same, i think. they cut off the blood supply to the brain by constricting the cartoid artery, thus rendering your opponent unconsious if the hold is not released in time. there is a certain technique to this, but its hard to explain without demonstrating.
