seem to be centered around the fact that people are terrified of death? So religion is designed to make people feel that they have something to look forward to when they die, provided they follow all the rules laid out for them? I'm not religious, nor am I afraid of death...Weird.

yes, religion is all about explaining the unknown, be it creation, death, behavior etc... we want to know everything and have some kind of peace of mind. it seems like the older people get the more they look to something else (religion) to calm their fears.
i personally like the religions that see their stories as just that: stories. native american religion is awesome like that. i like the idea of passing down stories that have meanings attached to them and help to instill morals into the generations. but i HATE religious people who preach their stories like they are real and actually happened and if you don't believe it you are in trouble. how stupid. but i don't blame the religion itself for people's stupidity. most all religions, including christianity, want people to be open minded and question things.
well, i guess i got off base there. anyway-i like religion as a comfort tool. i just wish i could find one that suited my needs, because there is something to be said about being apart of a group that shares your beliefs. maybe we could start our own religion yumyum! cause you just said youre not religious, but that doesn't mean you aren't spiritual!!

Its no accident that the idea of an afterlife came about with the ancient Egyptians. Life was so good that they wanted it to last forever, thus, the concept of an afterlife.
As to the devil being real? Sorry, no, that is based on a myth - I know that's not your question, but a previous poster makes me feel it is necessary to add a link about "Satan".
I for one never want to die - life is great and I KNOW that there is no "heaven" like in Christianity, because Christianity is based on an historical distortion of the truth. Some would say that makes life less precious, but I say that exactly the opposite is true - life is infinitely more precious if you only get one.

Some might see it as a fear of death, but I tend to see it as an exploration for understanding. The great questions of why and how this came to be. These are questions which can't be answered with science alone. So faith comes into play. I agree death is not something to be afraid of, fearing the inevitable is just a waste of time. But to question ones purpose that has immense value.
I personally do not belong to any particular religion. But I consider myself a person of faith. I believe there is something out there greater than myself. I believe we are all linked to it. But no one understands it. My faith helps to ground me and keep things in perspective. Faith is always a good thing. Blind acceptance isn't.

Religion... This word comes from the Latin "re-ligo" which means liaison between man and God. Christianity represents the liaison between man and Christ Who has resurrected. This liaison keeps man alive, even outside this life. Because of this liaison, death has no power over man, and so he can really live his life without great fear of death. Without such a conception of life, without a religion, the human condition becomes tragic and absurd. What's the purpose of life? What becomes with us afterlife? Without a religion, what do you think about death? How can you live your life when you know that some day you will disappear? What is the truth? Do you really are not afraid of death?

Religion is definitely based partially on fear. Not just the fear of death, but also the fear that injustice might go unpunished, hence hell.
Most religions use fear tactics rather than 'neighborly love' to recruit new members.
I do believe there are some good religious people out there who take the bits of truth that are found in their religion (every book has SOME truth, after all) and put them to good use. But overall, religion propagates cultural bigotry and rarely brings out the best in its followers.
I also am not religious and do not fear death... it's quite liberating, isn't it?

I am very religious but have never feared death. I simply see death as another part of life (I believe in reincarnation). I neither dread death nor anticipate it. I worship my deities because I love them. My deities aren't going to reward or punish me when I die. I will have learned whatever lessons that I have chosen to learn. My lives are whatever I choose to make of them.

Religion is a way for people to explain things that before science caught up, people didn't understand. It's also a way to seek comfort during hard times & it gives people the feeling of belonging to something bigger than they are.
I'm all for having your own beliefs & sticking with that without pushing it on anyone else. Viva le difference

Wow I am not religious or afraid of death either.
But I thank God he allows me to have a RELATIONSHIP with His Son, Jesus.
As far as death goes I am looking forward to it, but I am not in a hurry, There are to many people who have not heard the good news yet.
