Pope Leo I was the first Pope as we understand the concept today.

He was declared as such by the Council of Chalcedon in 451

what's your information that the Pope's footwear are nicely worth $500? i'm afraid you're making an assumption there, not declaring a generic actuality. collectively as nuns take vows of poverty, not all clergymen do -- basically people who belong to non secular orders such because of the fact the Franciscans. maximum clergymen at the instant are not participants of religious orders, in spite of the indisputable fact that --- maximum are diocesan clergymen, meaning they at the instant are not required to take vows of poverty. maximum of them stay fairly only, in spite of the indisputable fact that. The Pope, as Bishop of Rome, would not take a suited vow of poverty -- even in spite of the indisputable fact that he's not precisely residing an opulent existence, in assessment to those with extreme-profile positions inclusive of his. there is not any information that the present Pope, or any of his modern-day predecessors, misuses the Church's funds for own income or something like that. there is not any information that he "skims off the right" or makes use of the Church's factors to develop himself in my opinion. So, because of the fact of that, there is not any hypocrisy there. formally, the Pope gets no income. His common desires are presented for, inclusive of nutrition and housing and transportation etc. yet it is the case with clergymen and nuns too. So there is extremely no distinction there. The Pope lives in an condo interior the Vatican which, with the help of all money owed, isn't something extraordinarily fancy -- on no account in assessment to the "pads" of alternative heads of state international. The Pope, as you be attentive to, is a head of state besides as head of the Church. i'm Catholic and, no, I see no hypocrisy in this in any respect. .

Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." (Matthew 16:17-19)

The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock.

Peter was lucky enough to get the job because Jesus, in the only example of a pun (or wordplay of any type) in the Bible, told him 'You are Peter, and on this rock shall be built my Church' - which is appartently a cracking pun as 'Peter' and 'rock' are the same word.

What a nutty guy, that Son of God.

Peter was never declared a pope of the catholic church. The roman catholic church took scripture and twisted things around into things to make it fit their wants. Peter was told...
16And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
17And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.
18And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
19And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

When you take it in context, you see Peter clearly shows that he knows JESUS is the Son of God. That being the case, Peter nor anyone else can ever take his place or be "vicar" which boils down to being God on earth. Jesus said He would build His church on Peter (little stone) and the gates of hell would not prevail against it. The church is that of JESUS and not Peter nor the Catholic church. Jesus empowered Peter in the last verse with large responsibilities and abilities, but understand, that was ONLY to Peter. It was NOTHING that was to be handed down as they try to do with popes.
Look at what just happened recently. The pope died. After he was dead, MEN gathered and selected a new pope. It is IMPOSSIBLE for mere men to appoint someone into the same capacity that Jesus gave to Peter. All this twisting of scripture came into play back in the early centuries for the Roman Catholic church to build itself as the "universal" church with great power and to make money. I have more about this on my webpage.
