i think it means that we try to relate ourselves with other peoples stories. like for example we would put ourselves in their shoes and question ourselves."what would i have done in such a situation?" etc etc

I agree with you. And sometimes, we also learn about ourselves by looking to another people. Sometimes we ask why to ourselves, than we found the answers from seeing other people.
