man2:Sure you do. A father always knows whre his son is. Of course, I wouldn't know that, whould I?


man2 says " I wouldn't know that". What "that" stand for?
"I wouldn't know what father know, because I don't have father"?

in the sentence, the implication of "that" is the actual concept that a father should know where his son regular hang-outs is. the second father doesn't know the first father's son's usual hang-out (him not being the father)... therefore instead of saying, "a father always knows where his son is. of course, i wouldn't know where your son's usual hang-outs is, him being not my son". if you notice, the sentence is too long. therefore, we use that to replace "where your son's usual hang-outs is, him being not my son". that serves as a pronoun of a place, in that particular sentence of yours....

means he would not know because he does not have a son.
