AVG you can get it from download.com
also get adaware from lavasoft it is spyware.
I had to run them both multiple times to get most of the spywhere out.
When your done click CTRL+ALT+DELETE at the same time to open your task manager bar. Click task manager. Than click the tab "processes" on the top of the task bar window. now one by one type in for example winlogon.exe into google. YOuw ill be able to look up each porcess listed to make sure there is no spyware left. When you see one that is spyware you will need to know the lcoation of file which the google search will tel you. Than in task manager "cancel task" of that spyware and than delete it.. It won't delete if it is running (in use). If you have problems disconnect your internet connect and than cancel task as some may tryto auto restart.
Things to check also
Click Start-Programs-Startup
What ever is in your Startup directory starts when you start the computer. Often spyware is placed there.
Also go into your control panel and see what you can manualy uninstall first.
The reson for the manual instructions the updated AVG and updated adaware still missed a few things when I got a ton of junk from a bad program off limewire.

for details check the site: www.kaspersky.com
i usually get the refreshes in a local magazine tho, you should ask them how you can attain that. apart of that its a great sofware:)

Here is a list of all the major free anti-virus programs:
Avast:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
Anti-Vir:
http://www.free-av.com/
AOL AntiVirusShield:
http://www.activevirusshield.com/antivirus/freeav/index.adp?
AVG:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5
BitDefender 8: (on-demand only, no real-time protection)
http://www.bitdefender.com/PRODUCT-14-en--BitDefender-8-Free-Edition.html
Clamwin: (on-demand only, no real-time protection)
http://www.clamwin.com/
Personally, I use the AOL AntiVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL scare you. AntiVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.
In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, AntiVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.

AOL AntiVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources.
Free to anyone, AOL member or not.

Try the free version of AVG at grisoft.com, I have been using it for years. it upgrades for new viruses itself only drawback is if online it will scan at eight am, but you can cancel it and scan manually whenever you wish.It not only catches the virus, but will ask if you want to get rid of it and it goes the the virus vault which can be deleted at any time. I keep them in the vault for reference.

www.avast.com. It requires a code, which you get for free. I prefer it to AVG, because of the smooth interface and update. ANY antivirus program will slow your computer somewhat, but this one is minimal.

just get a faster computer. chances are you will need a new one if you are worried about software slowing it down now. it will only get slower as times goes by. unless you don't ever plan on downloading anything at all on your computer.
