A real Christian can fast at any time he wanted to. Christianity is not a show off religion as others consider.
God never asked to fast during the day and eat to the full during night.
If a Christian (A Born Again) fast, its a personal matter with God. And no need to tell the world that I / We am / are fasting. Some of us fast just avoiding tasty foods like non vegetarian, Some fast by avoiding complete food, some fast just by taking food once in a day. All these are personal relation with God.
Certainly Christian fasting is not by force or threat, but of ones free will.
Mathew 6:16 "When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show men they are fasting. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.
17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,
18 so that it will not be obvious to men that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

I usually fast weekly or maybe every two weeks if I have been sick that week. I take a day and just do something for God, like paint a mural on the church wall, while I listen to praise and worship music. I skip breakfast and lunch but when I am finished I may eat later that night or go until the next morning. I drink what ever I want though.

Christians do not fast out of obligation. Christians are allowed to eat what they like and drink alcohol. There is that part of the bible and popular myth about Jesus turning water into wine and the miracle of feeding two thousand people with little bread and fish. The bible is full of anecdotes about milk, honey, fish, meat, dinners, food, celebrations.
I had a burger today and felt guilty. I never eat red meat or poultry and will go back to my mostly vegetarian diet with a little dairy and fish.

My church fasts once a month and members give the cost of 2 meals for the needy. Fasting for a purpose is a wonderful blessing.
