sure it can!! I live in bakersfield, i have seen them race each other a few times.. The 5.0 is just a glorified 4.6.. Although you will have to do some modifacation to the 4.6 to hang with a 5.0......... But , size up the 5.0, see how well it can run, dont race it if he can run the quarter in the 12s or anything... Both stock, i would say the 5.0 will inch away from you, but there are simple ways to improve you're cars power, google search a mustang street racing website, they will help you....

Benzo's answer makes him sound like a bozo. The 5.0 is old technology pushrod engine (overhead valves). The 4.6, known as the "mod motor", is an entirely different engine with overhead cams. First available in 93 or 94, it is produced with single or double overhead cams with power ratings in the 350HP + range. The 4.6 is a far superior engine in stock form. It is a bit low on torque at lower rpm but makes up for it in higher hp numbers at much higher rpms. Try outrunning any highway patrol Ford. The new Ford police cruisers are all 4.6 sohc engines.

i thin it would be a pretty close race but i think it all depends on the driver and what the car actually has under the hood. but you'll never know til you see a race like that. Anything can happen!

the 4.6 has around 260hp and the 89 has about 225 but it is torquey. Either way, they both aren't very fast stock
