Hi they arent noisy, but they do make a small room hot. You can get a nice one from comet for £80, it is silver and has a little water dispenser/chiller. It doesnt have a freezer box though. I know this from experience because I just got one for my sister to take to uni.

Actually, I have had better luck buying the newer ones. The older models always make a loud humming noise. I also discovered, that if I had it sitting on a solid floor, like tile or wood, it was louder. On a carpet or thick rug the sound was was minimal. It would be worth it to pay extra money for a new one, since it will be quieter and you will have a waranty that will be easier to exchange, if it is American made.

hey man forget it - those mini things are soooo loud that they should all be painted orange.
If you want my advice get a cheap styrene box from your greengrocer and fill it with radio active mineral salts.
The potency diminishes after about two days so keep replenishing and make sure you bury the used salts very deep under ground = preferably a neighbour you dont like.

I don't think they are extremely noisy - they are available for £20 at the moment at argos.

it would depend how much time you spend around it, if you are near it a lot you will filter out any noise it makes, i used to live next to a motor way and directly underneath the flight path of aeroplanes to the local airport and never noticed noise from either because i was used to them

They're not too bad, you get the ocasional quiet whirring every few hours, but you quickly learn to block it out. I've had one for a couple of years and I don't notice it anymore.
