What do I say when I accidentally let the cat out of the bag?

I once asked my dad if he ever cheated on my mom and he said yes (they are still married). I seriously thought my mom knew because of conversations we had had in the past. I spoke with her tonight and brought it up to my mom in conversation thinking she knew about it. Only to my surprise did I find out that my mother never knew about my father’s unfaithfulness years ago… but instead had only suspected --- or as she said been in denial. Now I feel like sh*t for unintentionally revealing that "secret" to my mother. I SERIOUSLY thought she knew. What should I do or say, or should I just drop the subject??

It is not your fault that your father confessed something to you. If he didnt want his wife to know then he should have kept it to himself. Your mother already had suspicions about an affair and it is up to her how she deals with it. You may have put your foot in it, but ultimately your father is the one that did the deed. If your mother brings it up again just tell her that you thought she knew and either way I am sure that she would have also been upset if she found out that you had knowledge of your fathers affair when she didnt. But otherwise I think I would just let the matter drop as your mum didnt try to confirm the affair when she had reason to and probably would much rather forget about it.
