The most visible polygamists in our country tend to be those who are visible because they fulfill or even inspire the worst stereo-types we've come to associate with this way of life. The publicity garnered by Warren Jeffs and the FLDS recently has exacerbated our concern, which is sometimes perfectly valid, for a culture which may nurture sexual abuse, predation, and exploitation of women and especially children caught in circumstances over which they are powerless. Unfortunately, our ideas about this aspect of polygamy have come to represent our ideas about all aspects of polygamy in general.
Additionally, polygamy contradicts the country's mainstream perspective of marriage in a historical and moral context, and an economy grounded in trade and commerce isn't structured to support plural marriages, so it's contrary what propells our nation in the first place. It would be very difficult to legally honor plural marriages.
And there isn't anything wrong with consenting adults practicing polygamy, or much else for that matter.

the thing with polygamy it tends to be one man and multiple women
this downgrades the importance of women and at the expense of men who just find another if they don't get what they want when they want it. A woman in that situation would face finding a new home, custody battles if there are children involved and possible relocation
not so free thinking eh?
for the man it isn't all a bed of roses either - jealousy can erupt between wives as each wants as big a piece of their husband as they can get over and above the other wives.
so free thinking? perhaps
liberating? hardly
unrelated? what of the children?
i hope i have been able to add something to your debate with the above

Because polygamists don't let women choose who they marry, when they marry or how many children they have. Often, the women are under age and are forced into it. Some are as young as 12 or 13.
Also, child abuse and incest are rampant in polygamist families.
Oh I almost forgot to mention - they have tons and tons of children, but the wives aren't allowed to work outside the home and the families live on welfare - taxpayer money. The kids don't get a decent education because they stay home all day. Then, in turn, they marry lots of women and have lots of children they can't support because they can't get good jobs.

It always seems to boil down to the man having control over what some may think of as a harem rather than relationships built on trust and mutual respect. If we lived in a matriarchial society would women be allowed to have several husbands? I think it all boils down to relgious beleifs and social norms.

Honestly, I don't see a problem with it. I'm actually a big believer in that you can love more than one person at a time. If we can have three best friends, why not three wives or husbands?! I really would have no problem having more than one husband, because I don't see one guy ever actually satisfying me sexually, spiritually, emotionally, etc. Its just too much work for one man!
... Then again, maybe I'm just greedy.

polygamy is having more than one spouse. It may show no devotion at all but it was legal to some religions and cultures. sometimes, it's not easy talking about religion, polygamy to some creates negative outlook but what matters here is the respect of our own beliefs.

It is illegal in the US because Utah wanted to become a state and politicians were afraid they would not get votes from the polygamist. For those who referenced the Bible, it was a common practice in the Bible.

Poligamy is illegal in line with holy Bible. But in Islamic teaching poligamy is allowed as an emergency door for maximum 4 wives if:
1)man has a capability to act fairly in his love and in his financial aspect for financing so many wives.
2)man has so great desires or passion so one wife can be born
and for avoiding of fornification or adultery which is prohibited.
3)his first wife is unfertile who can not give birth for a baby
4)his first wife has a long illness so she can not treat her husband regularly as her obligation
5)his first wife gives permission to her husband for getting married to another woman
But in our holy Qur'an Allah the only one God spoke that men are difficult or impossible to be fairly among their wives.,because fairly is not only related to money and wealth but also to love feeling in their hearts..
