Why did the majority of people change from polytheism to monotheism?

i think it was Aten (the sun disc) the monotheist egyptians worshipped, wasn't it? ie the name of the period's king, Akhenaten

the egyptians were not straight polytheists, they believed their gods were manifestations and aspects of a single divine source in the same way many wiccans do today.

No as they still worshiped the other Egyptian Gods and Goddess.
Ra was the same as the CREATOR in Christianity.
Many religions worshiped the sun at the same time or earlier as it timed the growing and fallow seasons.

Apparently from what I have found El seems to predate him but comes from the area that is now Iraq. These are both "Father" gods that the other gods are created by. Kind of like Chronos or Zeus

Ahura Mazda, a Zoroastrian god, is the first monotheistic god. They were in Persia, and predate the Egyptians. Akhenaton was later, and he tried to make Egypt monotheistic, but they didn't buy it.

Could be, the first recorded, unfortunately, the majority didn't, but the Pharaoh (Akenaton) and his entourage did.
