Try the technique known as "wet-on-wet" that is still shown through old clips of Bob Ross and William Alexander.
Their paint has less oils in the tubes and they recommend using 2-inch paint brushes, fan brushes, liners, paint knife, etc. Apply a white oil primer to the canvas and then begin the outer or farther parts of the landscape, gradually bringing in closer the foreground. Never let the paint dry while you're painting.
Bob Ross's paints are expensive, but well worth it.

How about taking some art appreciation or art history classes.
Take a local class in oil painting so you see how others solve their problems.
Trips to the museum -- over and over again, view the masters of the craft.
Read the book, "My Name is Asher Lev" by Chaim Potok.

Try an art school. Thats what they're for- to help those with talent.
You can't teach one to Paint (art) but you can help with particular defects or bring out their strengths.
I don't care much for self taught doctors.

try doing sketches or studies of a ton of things without worrying too much about detail instead of working on one good painting. eventually these can develop into works that you get into in more depth
there are some good instructional books out there with interesting excersises that could help
hope it helps

Yeah. Go get un-self taught. In other words, go take some classes!
They've been doing this for centuries, you'd be silly to NOT learn from their mistakes and triumphs.
