Dont worry, just keep talking on any subject u feel like, but it must be only in english. I have some of my colleagues who have studied thier schooling in their Mother tongue. They have started learning english only when they have joined colleges. But now u will find them speaking english like an expert.
I hope this information will provide with immense confidence. Please take a print out of this and paste it where u often keep watching, this will add to ur confidence.

you try to speak with strangers in English only what ever it may be right or wrong, or with mistakes, then, slowly continue this habit . after a few days you will observe the growth of confidence.
also, while speaking with strangers, you give suggestions to your mind "this fellow don't know much English .I have much more knowledge of English than him. in this way if you think, you can easily build up confidence

This topic can be very complicated. I like to stay very practical. So here goes. You are nervous to speak to people because you don't want your feelings hurt from their disapproval. There are things about yourself that you aren't comfortable with. Find out what those are and "fix them".
Talk to many people. YOU MUST practice. You can read and think all you want. But field experience is the only way to improve.
Stick with topics you "are" comfortable with for now... Start with harmless questions that CAN"T possibly have them disapprove of you. Ask about homework. Ask where is the restroom. For petes sake, even ask how's the weather. Just start talking and eventually go to riskier topics such as opinions. What do you think about such and such teacher. What kind of movie you like? etc..
Good luck.

Practice, practice and more practice. I am not trying to be funny, you are afraid of public speaking to start with. Close your eyes and just go for it. Use note cards and read from them if you have too.

i have the same problem, im still working on solving it but i try different things to build up my speaking confidence. in class i try to answer the questions that im positive about the answer. also i try reading to my little brother everynight because it is good practice speaking. it also helps if you try to start one on one conversations with people you feel semi-confortable with.
