He's doing one of three things...
Scratching (not likely but possible). Most dogs scratch slowly on a fence or other stationary object but roll scratching is possible.
Attempting to "dirt bathe" (to help with any itches). Identified by sniffing and scratching and then full rolls and back wiggles in a dirt patch or the sandiest part of the yard.
Most likely it's what I call "smell rolling" to rid himself of the "predator smell". Most dogs roll in dead things because the smell (or imagined smell...some do it even without the dead thing to roll in) works to cover up their own natural smell and thus confuse their prey. Oftentimes this is ritual after a run or hunt. You can tell this is what your dog is doing if he starts by rubbing the sides of this face on the ground first and then rubbing his body on the ground in a dragging or flopping motion afterward. In short it's just instinct just kicking in...

this time of year he is probably moulting and he is removing the dead fur by writhing on his back on the grass brush him regularly and see if this makes a difference

May he/she is itchy. I put a little oil in my dog's food. go to Yahoo Search and type in----itchy dog--------there's stuff to read and buy.

there could b a smell there that he likes? my dog does that too....or itchy....sweaty? those could be it...
