This is a question that I actually think about a lot...
1) I work in a part-time student position in the cafeteria at the university that I attend. When I first started working, I asked somebody, "What do we do with all the leftover food at the end of the day?" I asked because I was hoping that I was going to get to take some home :). But to my surprise, they said that we just throw it out!
As I worked more, I saw that we throw out HUGE QUANTITIES of food at the end of EVERY DAY. It's RIDICULOUS! And the thing is, I know we're not the only cafeteria that does this! There's over 20 other cafeterias on this campus, not to mention the thousands of other universities nationwide, worldwide, not to mention all the restaurants in the world, etc.
So I got to thinking, what if we didn't throw it out? I mean, I know it's probably against health code to serve it the next day, but in all honestly, we know the food is still good... If we could just donate it to soup kitchens, to charities for homeless, etc, it wouldn't go to waste and we'd be giving homeless people the cure to their hunger and the strength to work for their future...
2) This next idea is more of a stretch that the first... But I can summarize the whole idea into two words: Bill Gates.
What I mean to say is that there are soooo many ridiculously rich people in the world. Donald Trump, Warren Buffet, etc. They have so much money it's disgusting. The average person, we could spare a dollar or two, maybe, maybe not... But the multi-BILLIONAIRES of our world can spare MILLIONS! There's no reason that they can't! Imagine what all this money, if donated to charities, could do for the homeless! It's not a stretch to say that it could put an END to homelessness for GOOD!
Granted, a lot of homelessness has nothing to do with lack of money and food, but just a mental deficiency such as drug addiction.
In conclusion, it's important to realize that homelessness can never really end... It's part of the way the world works. There will always be upper, middle, and lower class, because that's just how it is... There's no way around it. I don't know how to put the proof into any other words than that.
However, I think the two ideas that I threw out, as well as others that I didn't discuss, can go a long way in at least DECREASING homelessness on the streets

i really wish i knew! i always ask my parents what we can do- and my mum told me that we can't save the world BUT we can, as individuals, make a difference. true enough we can't help all the poor people, but we can help a few. so because of that i make sure that if i go into a pastry shop and i see a poor person outside, i buy them some food too. if i see a poor person with no shoes, i go home and see if there are an extra pair that we don't need that we can give them. give the clothes u don't wear anymore to charity. buy some food for them, buy the little kids a book maybe! if u happen to always see the same poor person, make it point to say hello to them and see if they need anything- but obviously, dont do too much because that might lead to problems. one thing my mum told me is that its better to buy them some food or warm clothing than giving them money because if u give them money they will spend it on drugs/smokes/alcohol etc- then u are just feeding their habit!
i was thinking the other day, can u believe how lonely they must be? they probably have so many problems and so many thoughts but nobody listens to them, nobody takes the time to even say hello! atleast we have friends (and even Yahoo! Answers) to put out our feelings, they are so ignored and so lonely- it must be very upsetting isn't it? so, make it a point that if u are going to give them some change or give them some food- smile!
hope this helps!

have you seen the movie "Pay It Forward"? it shows a little boy's simple idea that each person help 3 people n in return, they help 3 other people, looks like this idea would work, but the problem is that we'r all too selfish, lazy or afraid to do anything for people we don't know.
about politicians, these r the people who start their politics clean but get lured into the world of corruption n bribary. we need politicians who will refuse to sell themselves n punish those that do n those that try to buy them.
n then there's the idea of donating leftover food. that is a very very good idea. but i guess nobody wants to take the risk of trying it.
if these problems r solved, i'm sure we can make a difference.
