I would like to know what the letters E, M & O stand for. I’ve tried to dig up on EMO history, but it can be bewildering. It’s supposedly related to punk and hardcore, however the music description, fashion and psychological makeup of EMO and the lists of new bands seem to be at odds with every punk maxim. Correct me if I’m wrong. How can a pop band be hardcore or be bona fide punk? How does it relate to hardcore heavy metal? Are EMO fans really distilling the 1990’s grunge attitude and packaging it like Coca-Cola Light? Could the following old school bands be mistaken for being EMO: The Pixies; Nirvana; Radiohead; The Presidents of the United States of America – or the Police, or the Smiths even? I’m sorry if I offended any EMO fans. But seriously, I’m here to know, not to say I know.

There seems to be disagreement on whether or not EMO even meets with hardcore. Now I'm even more confused! Good golly Miss Molly, there’s screamo and more ice-cream flavours!

My teen daughter hates the term...she says it is used to describe anyone who dresses differently. She likes to dress in different styles and one day wore my wedding dress to school with a t-shirt over it (not a fancy dress, but more like a prom-style dress without straps). She does not consider herself goth, emo or any other thing but herself....she hates labels.

Emo is a style of music and a lifestyle. Some people are confusing it with a "cult" now, HEH. I used to be "emo" in higschool but got out of that and now I listen to everything without belonging to a "clique" in specific which I consider stupid and immature.

Well today those bands you mentioned aren't considered emo. Nirvana is more grunge, Radiohead alternative rock? The rests are like the original punk bands that started in the 80's. I think Emo was mentioned in a band in the 80's but people never really gave any attention to it, but 4 or 5 years ago people started to use that term for a style of punk that was melodic and the lyrics were more emotional.

There are other styles like screamo, emo-core hardcore, indie rock etc.

It is not considered gothic music. Goths and Emo's are different. Emo is more inclined to punk rock and Goth music to heavy metal.

Emo is short for emotional. It's a genre that is an offshoot of goth but they claim they aren't. Along the lines of thinking they created something new when it was really in existance to some degree all along. They're the pop branch of goth, so they aren't hardcore or anything like that.

You are not going to get simple categorization when it comes to EMO. EMO is like pornography-you know it when you see it. EMO is short for emotional-so anyone who is angst ridden is EMO. That makes the Smiths big-time EMO.
