nothing unites a group better than a common enemy. nothing is more convenient than having someone else to point to in order to deflect attention from one's own "sins". bigoted fundy Christians simply use gay folks as the shared enemy and a repository for their own guilts. too bad such Christians don't heed the words of their favorite celestial celebrity ...

I understand some of it. The book of Romans has a few choice words on homosexuals. If someone is even a little different it's easy to feel threatened and zero in on a single verse and make it bold and underlined.
Straight men can feel threatened by gay men. I knew this guy who was about 5'10" and weighed about 240 who said he'd never go into a gay bar because everyone would be after him -- I just said look at yourself, dude.
My point is difference is threatening whether it is in a religion context or just a straight man walking down the street.
Now a smoke screen -- I expect that from our government, I don't think our spiritual leaders are quite that organized nor do they have that kind of an agenda.
Personally, I've not seen a lot of anti-gay propaganda coming out of any church. However, I am sure if I was a little flamboyant that the straight men IN the church would feel threatened and probably transfer that fear to their children.
Men are pigs! They wanna to screw all the time. Straight men assume because they really want to jump any female tail that the gay man must want to jump any tail.
Guilt by association, I suppose. hehe.

Good question.
I'm going to post my opinion however, so feel free to give me the thumbs down for not answering the question, since it doesn't pertain to me.
I feel that some people need to have a common enemy so that they can "belong." The Crusades, the Holocaust, the Inquisition, etc. are all the same. They've rallied around a common enemy in the name of religion, and it has caused terrible deaths and violence in the name of God. How horrible is that? I think gays have replaced Jews and blacks as the new martyrs in Christiandom.

Oh, Christians believe their always under attack. It's either the Romans, or the Muslims, or the Atheists, or the gays...its been going on a long time. Isn't it about time they got over it and started living in this century?

Yeah I don't get that. And when people say that the sanctity of marriage is under siege by gays. It's not like the straight people are doing a great job with all the divorces.

It is just a misconception that homosexual is a kind of lifestyle or a chosen thing. I just see that there are many peole so lack of knowledge. OK..it is simple. Who would want to be a homosexual, being rejected by all sociaties?Who would want to choose to be rejected?

I don't believe any homosexual personally interferes with ones practicing their faith. Many are trying to change the Christian marriage laws the United States has formed.
Let us get one thing straight, God doesnt hate homosexuals. Homosexuality is one of the things listed in the Bible that God cannot tolerate, but God hates what he has determined to be sin, but does not hate the sinner.
If God hated sinners he would hate everyone. I will let God do the judging but I would like to see the marriage laws stay how they are.
Wish you the best.

Well, its a religious belief of us muslims that when homosexuality and pre-marital sex will increase beyond limits, the Day of Judgement will be near. But before that, these sinners will be punished like the people of Prophet Lut.
As we can see there are so many natural disasters occuring around the world eg: Hurricanes in america, Tsunamis, the most disasterous earthquake in Pakistan, heavy downfall of rain in India. All these are small punsihment from allah as a sign for us to still leave our sins.

I've said it before and will again--it's easier for them to take on someone else's "sins" and "temptations" than to clean their own houses and take care of themselves. It keeps the congregation pumped up, scared of the rest of the world, and tithing/contributing. We're simply the boogiemen and women du jour.
