My girl has 2 big dogs, a lab and a doverman. I have a cat. She has a crate for when we are at work. They are constantly dumping and pissing on the floor, on the furniture and everywhere in between. The place smells like heavy amonia and when I aproach her appartment the gaseous cloud hits me before I even enter. I am sick of it, but when I bring it up she gets her feelings hurt. I am at my wits end and my head is not getting enough oxegen so please excuse the spelling errors. I bought an air filter and I run it at max, but even with this it does not help. I like her so I do not want to get up and go, so how can I explain to her that small apartments and big annimals just do not work in the most political and polite way possible.

Do you rent your apartment? I'm surprised the landlord allows them if you do. Can y'all move to a house?

First off...if you can't be honest with your significant other, and you're not even married...YOU DON'T NEED TO BE TOGETHER. Obviously, she is not taking your feelings into account...much less the feelings of those animals. I don't know where you live, but in NYC they have dog walking companies that charge around $10 for 1/2 walk-$20 for 1 hour walk or hire a trustful friend to walk them maybe cheaper than one of these companies will do it for. This way your dogs don't have to relieve themselves in the apartment. If you do want to keep these pets, that's the first thing that I suggest that you do. Dogs being locked up in a crate all day...they've got to go to the bathroom at some point. There are special products that deter them from using the bathroom in spots that they've already "marked". You definitely need to calmly sit down and let your girlfriend know what's on your mind if your relationship means a lot to you, because without communication there's nothing. Just remember to stay calm, if you start yelling it's not going to resolve anything...your being calm will get and keep her attention. When you yell...we ignore you... Could you move to a larger place? The following website also offers a great area where they give advice on pets...and the info. is from real vets! Good luck.

That would drive me crazy and I have Great Danes and Newfoundlands!!!!!!!!!!!

I think perhaps she just is not walking them enough for them to take care of what they need to do outside. Maybe you could suggest going away for a weekend.... and while the dogs are at the kennel.... have a cleaning company clean the apartment and when the dogs come back...... suggest you both walk the dogs when getting home from work and before bed and early in the morning! She might need to hire a dog walker if the hours she walks are long.

I don't want to sound mean but..... that ammonia smell is harmful to YOU and to the ANIMALS as well. It not only causes lung irritation but long term lung tissue damage.

Help her clean up her act or her neighbors may have the dogs taken from her.

Wish I could be more help.

I understand your dilemna but I really think that the problem lies with your girlfriend not with the animals. Let me explain, I have a Boxer, an American Bulldog and a Bulloxer puppy AND two cats that I rescued four years ago. I live in a motorhome because we travel a lot for my husbands job. I know that these animals need a lot of exercise and room to play so I make it my priority to see that they get to go out for walks and exercise at least three times during the day...this is also necessary for their bathroom schedules to keep them from going in the house. My home is always clean and doesn't smell with all these animals! I also take them out first thing in the morning and last thing before bed just for potty time and I pet them and show them how proud I am of them for going potty when I take them out. Any dog's main objective is to please their human...it's what they live for! I'm thinking that your girlfriend has started paying less attention to her dogs since you came into the picture and that's where the problem begins. Why don't you get involved with the dogs yourself and both of you enjoy them together and do the things that's necessary for them. Then the dogs won't feel left out and neglected and your girlfriend won't feel pulled in two directions. If you don't want to deal with the dogs or are not a "dog-lover" then you may have picked the wrong girlfriend.

I have a 2 room house with 4 dogs (Samoyed, basset, dachshund, poodle), 4 grown cats, a kitten (all 5 are street rescues), one kid and a hubby...

It is all a training, cleaning and organization problem... I take the dogs out every 2-3 hours to make sure they pee and poo where they should, and I have 3 litter boxes which I clean twice a day.

Whole house gets vacuumed and mopped daily.

Whenever there is an "accident" inside I treat it with baking soda, leaving it overnight and vacuuming the next day.

I don't mean to lie saying I have an odorless house, as my basset has a "perfume" of its own, but I have never been told that the air is unbreathable in here... in fact, when I get visitors, they get amazed when they see cat after cat greeting them!!!

Sounds like the owners are the problem, not the animals. Kennel the dogs when you're not home, and make sure to take them out often so they aren't pissing on themselves. Take the animals to obedience school to help resolve dominance issues which could be a reason for the defecation in the home. If that doesn't help, move. And for Pete's sake, just open a window and put a fan in it.

I agree large dogs do not belong in a small apartment.Tell her it's having an impact on your quality of life together. You can't get rid of the animals now,so move to a bigger place or rent a house and take the animals out frequently for exercise. I don't think they sound happy either!
PS Odoban works wonder for the smell. You can get it at Sam's Club.(I know I have 2 cats and 4 dogs)

Buy ane acre on a farm, Animals aren't meant to be cooped up in a tiny living space,,Neither are people,,.They need room to breath, walk explore.. etc,, if you don't have the space to allow pets to have a full life maybe you shouldn't have pets.
Not trying to be mean, I know people love their pets,, but please do them the service of being responsible pet owners, two people two big dogs and a cat in a One bedroom apartment sounds alot like an overcrowded prison.. for the pets and the people.

I personaly would look for a house to rent or buy, then the dogs can have their space!!! Thats just me thought... Does she see the problem her dogs are causing? I had a dog who was aggresive with my other dog and she was getting rough with our young kids, finally we both(he more then me) had enought and Tessa Blue went to live on a farm. She needs to see the problem and be stronge enought to resolve it! P.s good luck getting the smells out of the carpet....

Tell your girl to sell AT least two of her pets and vaccuum and shampoo her carpet. If the heavy ammonia smell is still there after she has gotten rid of AT LEAST two of the pets, ask her to find another apartment to move in.
