I have been playing piano since I was 5. I pretty much always hated it, now that I think back, but now I finally quit. I would go to college next year, but since I was doing music I have no money for college and not exceptional grades. I always was interested in traveling to other places and doing things that are out of the ordinary. So I wonder, with no purpose in my life, should I join the army and find a purpose and get some money and have my college paid for? The only problem is that I would like to experience cultures, not destroy them with bombs. Is it really worth it to join the army? Is it as bad as everyone says? Or is it actually better than that?

go ahead and join. it is a great way to travel and see the world. not every mos (job) in the army is combat. so yes you can still join with having to destroy anything. no it is not as bad as people say. dont believe everything you see on tv or what you read in the papers. the army is what you make of it. some people love it and some people just think that it is ok. but you never know until you try it.

I can tell you that I experienced the same things you are. I would definately go check it out and make that decision for yourself. People say this and that and get all political when you ask a question like you just did but let me tell you this...just because you are in the army does not mean that you will have to kill people or blow anyone up. There are plenty of other jobs, even some high tech jobs that are offered. Do not close your mind until you see for yourself. Remember, army recruiters usually are going to try to push you toward a job that they need to meet a quota for. Do some research and see what you would like to do and then have an idea when you go talk to them. I can tell you that the army offers free college tuition, I am almost finished with my degree now and have not paid one dime. They also are alot more about families than you might think from the outside looking in. I am a single mom with 3 kids and I get nothing but support from my unit.

No, I love my country, but i also think things are going to get alot worse. Not only in Iraq. I have two boys. I don't want them dieing in war. I'm not sure we have all the facts about this war. It doesn't seem right.

that is the way they get all young people to join. By selling you the idea that you'll find purpose and opportunity. i can't stand seeing such young people dieing. Here and in other countries.

Ive talked to alot of young army men. They are taught to believe that they will not die. The perfect time for the army to recruit a person is when they are so young, they still think they are invinsable.

I think it is worse than what people are saying.

Have you looked into grants. There are many scholarships for artist and musicians, and also student loans too. Don't let the feeling of having no purpose, make your decision to go to war. Believe me. Every one has a purpose. If you keep searching you'll find something for you that has meaning.

No you should not join. The Army is not some free trip around the world. And no it is not as bad as people make it seem. People on here make it sound like you are going to be shipped to Iraq right away and be killed.

I would suggest talking to recruiters from all the branches, including the Coast Guard. You could probably find something more to your liking in the Navy or Air Force. But remember, it is not some free ride and there is a very serious task at hand.

The Army is not just a tool that the president uses to destroy other countries with bombs. Alot of people join the army and love it. Alot join it and hate it. The one question you really need to ask yourself is are you willing to be deployed, leaving your family to serve your country? If there is even a sliver of you that says no, then the Army is not for you. My husband was telling me today that there are so many guys in the army who are trying to find excuses to not be deployed. They don't want to go overseas. You shouldn't join if you are not willing to serve. It's the Army.

I say join! I know just as many people that went to college, even though they didnt know what it was they wanted to do at that point in their lives. college helped some of them find out what it was they wanted to do. The military can do the same exact thing, to help you find out what you want to do. They will train you in things such as mechanics, engineering, flying, even cooking! So I say go for it! Maybe you'll do it for a while but not the rest of your life. It could be worth a try.

Don't join now, what until we get a new president or congress. Then you will know which way the military is going before you join the army.

It isn't always easy, but go and do your share like all Americans who enjoy our nation. You will learn a lot about life and the world(you won't be like a lot of these free loaders on this site). It will not be joyful experience but it will expand your horizons and you will have something to be proud of for the rest of your life. You may not agree with the politics, but at least you'll do your share.
