It is not a branch of Chrisianity as their beliefs are not in sync with accepted Christian/biblical doctrine. They are more of a cult.
The vast majority of Christian denominations in the United States, does not regard the Mormon church as a Christian church. That is because the official writings of Mormonism deny fundamental teachings of orthodox Christianity. For example, the Nicene Creed confesses the clear biblical truth that Jesus Christ, the second Person of the Trinity, is "of one substance with the Father." This central article of the Christian faith is expressly rejected by Mormon teaching -- thus undermining the very heart of the scriptural Gospel itself. In a chapter titled "Jesus Christ, the Son of God: Are Mormons Christian?" the president of Brigham Young University (Rex Lee, What Do Mormons Believe? [Salt Lake City: Deseret Book, 1992] summarizes Mormon teaching by stating that the three persons of the Trinity are "not... one being" (21), but are "separate individuals." In addition, the Father is regarded as having a body "of flesh and bone" (22). Such teaching is contrary to the Holy Scriptures, destructive to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and indicative of the fact that Mormon teaching is not Christian.

Mormons believe in God the Father, His Son Jesus Christ and in the Holy Ghost as three separate beings. So if the definition of "Christian" is believing in Christ, then Mormons are Christian. Joseph Smith Restored the Church, it is not a reformation like protestant sects. For more info, see mormon.org or lds.org
Evidence exists in the bible of the fact that the Godhead are three distinct individuals. God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Ghost (as represented by a dove) were all three present at Christ's baptism. Read more about it and you will see that they indeed were all present.

They have attached different characteristics to Jesus, God and the Holy Spirit other than what the Bible teaches alone, therefore they are worshiping an all together different god, different jesus and different holy spirit.
One example: Their jesus is concidered to be the spirit brother of Lucifer/Satan. This is not the Jesus of the Holy Bible.
To be a CHRISTian is to believe and worship Jesus Christ and all that He taught, no more and no less.
To worship something other than what Christ taught is to worship someing other than Christ.
They are not Christians. The better title would be that of "Joseph-Smith-ians"
