Some people bite their fingernails when they're nervous, upset or simply bored; while for others this is just a bad habit that can be broken if and when the individual decides to do it.

It's a nervous habit. Some people don't even realize that they're doing it. My friend had this problem for a while and fixed it by putting a rubber band around her wrist and whenever she found herself biting her nails she stopped biting her nails. Painful, but it works. I also have this problem so I always paint my nails. When I have polish on my nails I don't bite my nails.

Because it saves you the trouble of cutting them. Also some nails are hard to cut and easier to bite off. I find toenails a bit difficult to bite though.
