I used to do that years ago for the kids.
Use clear shorter plastic cups for best effect/viewing.
Use chocolate pudding and make that as directed. Then crumble up some Oreos (in a baggie pound them into granules). Mix that all together. Put a few of the crumbs on the top. Stick a gummy worm or two inside so it looks likes it's coming out of the "dirt."
Remember: those will have to be kept refrigerated bc of the pudding.

Dirt Pudding
Cream together and set aside:
1/4 C. margarine
8 oz. cream cheese
1 cup powdered sugar
Mix:
3 1/2 cups milk
2 (6 oz.) pkgs. French vanilla pudding
12 oz. Cool Whip
Beat milk and pudding 2 minutes with mixer. Fold in Cool Whip. Combine with cream cheese mixture. Crush 20 oz. pkgs. of Oreo cookie in blender or food processor, a few at a time until the consistency of dirt.
Use a clean flower pot to serve. Place 1/4 of cookie mixture in pot, then 1/3 of pudding mixture. Keep layering this until you end with "dirt" on top. Refrigerate. Put a few silk flowers in center, add some gummy worms "crawling" out of the pot! Serve with a trowel.

I use Jello's chocolate instant pudding. Follow the directions on the box. Crush chocolate cookies like oreos and sprinkle on top or mix in the pudding. Place the cookies in a ziploc and use a rolling pin or meat pounder to crush the cookies. But don't roll or pound the crumbs too fine. Then stick a few gummy worms or gummy crickets. For grass, use food coloring and shaved coconut.

I don't know too much about it but I saw a recipe once where you make instant chocolate pudding and crumble Oreo cookies on top for the "dirt" and then add gummy worms on top as well. The crumbled up cookies and gummy worms can also go on top of icecream as well.

chocolate pudding, topped with crushed chocolate cookies (looks like soil) -- and stick some gummy worms, gummy bugs, etc. down in it.
Make them individually in clear plastic cups, so some of the underground gummy critters will show. The kids love it.
