I think the most accurate translation with good commentray is Yusuf Ali's. Then there is Rashad Khalifa who has a very loose interpretation, but appeals to many Westerners as he leaves all the thinking to you; he is probably the most liberal as well. If you want just a typical one to read online I suggest:

thank you so much for your integrity and interest in other religions; whether you're considering conversion or you would just like to learn. May God guide us all to the straight path. Peace!

Personally I would not recommend reading a "sparknotes" version of the Qu'ran because the meaning will be twisted by the translation to English. The best thing to do is to get a copy from a Mosque (if you can find one) or get a copy that is translated word for word into English.

http://www.searchtruth.com/chapter_display.php?chapter=1&translator=4
so u can take this along with u. visit a local Imaam -scholar who has good knowledge about everything associated with Islam. ask him for historical events. and then learn the Qu'ran side by side. that way u will know why and when was a particular surah revealed.
EDIT: TODEFIANTONE -- dont u have anything else in ur own words to say? have u ever been to school? get a better claim next time. and also i have given u an answer in the other question so please learn about ur histories, then u can blame others. people who killed from centuries and generations and since beginning of mankind, shouldnt blame others.

Any holy book will lose some of its meaning when translated, that's why the Quran is highly missinterpreted by idiots, and the same goes for the Bible, that's why you'll find many versions of the Bible because very few can read the original language.
So you better find some Arabic/English speaker Muslim, who is not radical and ask him to help you understand it.

I like the Yusuf Ali translation. It can be had for about fifteen bucks. Lots of footnotes.

many of the Muslim brands of children's cereal have passages from the Qu'ran written in English on the back of the box.
Now all you need is milk!
