I think they are an absolute necessity, and people who feel that they are free day care for minorities should realize that they are income based, not race based, and the idea of helping children who come from families of lower incomes is a good idea that will help save this country money in the long run. They should also realize that becoming poor can happen to anyone at anytime without any warning, and if that happened to them...they would be thankful that the government has found ways to help them help themselves.

I can't believe some of the answers people are giving. Why should kids be punished because parents can not afford to send their kids to an expensive preschool? I would really like to know why it is so awful for the working poor to ask for help when they are doing the best they can. That is a very bigoted attitude.
Head Start is a wonderful program. Children often get the "head start" in their education that they need to succeed.

I have mixed opinions on this. When my son was 4 he was in a GREAT Head Start program. The teacher was AWESOME and she made a lasting impression on him. He is in high school now. However, I looked into some recently and was disappointed at what I saw. That doesn't mean that they are all bad. Each one needs to be assessed on its own merit. My advise is check out a few different ones in your area. Talk to the parents and interact with the teachers. You should be able to get a good feeling one way or the other. Good luck!

I think it is great, and it's a free program. My son went through Head Start and he is now in Kinder, he is a little ahead of the other children. I also work at a Head Start Center when I am not deployed overseas.

i think head start is a wonderful program. i worked for the follow thru program, which is a step up from head start. follow thru started in grade 1 thru 3. my son was in the program in those years and i feel it worked very well for him. there is a teacher and an aide in the classroom and depending on the number of students, it's almost like them having an individual tutor. that was 30 years ago and today he is a very well estabilshed person.

Its all abit of a rubbish. Firstly there has never been enough preschools to cater for all the children. I think if you live in an isolated situation your child will benefit by having some kids to play with but as for learning you can teach them the same thing very easily yourself.

I think it is a wonderful thing. I live in GA and they have the no child left behind from our lottery. Since my daughter has been in school she is so much happier, rather than when she was at home. At home their attention span is poor for there are so many other things they wanna do. Verse school where there is structure. And they learn more for that reason.

Kids who attend this program are usually better off when they get to Kindergarten. It kind of teaches them how to be away from school and how to respect the authority of others.
Notice I say USUALLY though, because often the kids who attend free, funded pre-K are coming from low income homes with issues.

Expensive babysitting program for minorities. After two generations, at the very least you'd expect that better English would be spoken by those going through the program; NOT.
