Eating red meat in moderation is perfectly ok. No, Henry VIII did NOT go mad and have to be carried around because he ate red meat. Virtually all people of rank at that time did eat red meat. H8 ate voraciously, and overate like a friggin' pig. He also suffered from syphilis, gout, and many other illnesses, some of them causing his odd ways. If you limit your red meat consumption to once, or even twice a week, you will do just fine and not have ill effects of red meat in your middle aged years. Red meats have the most amount of fat and calories, and have a tendancy to stay in your colon longer, therefore possibly presenting problems with CA of the colon in later life. It can cause clogging of the arteries, and fat deposits in and around your heart. But this is when red meat is consumed in large amounts. Most problems will not be noticeable until one reaches middle age, although it is not unknown for a young person to suffer a heart attack who has indulged in way too much bad foods and is morbidly obese. Just remember: moderation and you will be fine.

Trust me everything you eat will kill you eventually. We are designed to eat meat as it provides some of the essential amino acids that we require for life and protein synthesis. Most of these proteins will however, can be synthesized from the amino acids in vegtables. Some of the latest stuff is interesting though they are researching the Mediterranean Diet which is essentially what people in the Greek Islands eat. Lots of vegetables, a good bit of fruit. olive oil for cooking, and fish once a week and red meat once a month. They have had some incredible results from 5 years studies which were triggered because of the overall general health of people in these regions. When give to a substantial number of Americans from 74 to 92 years old the ones who began to eat the Med Diet had a 50% better longevity then the half of the group that continued eating the American Diet.

Red meat is usually OK if it is not ground. Ground meat has a real potential for bacteria to be draw into the grinding and remain in the middle of the meat. Regular steaks however, are generally sterile except for their surfaces and can be eaten cooked rare. (I love it this way) Henry was probable crazy for other reasons beside red meat. The Uric acid in the red meat might have crippled him if he had a bad case of Gouty arthritis otherwise the red mean would not have been that bad. Of course we will mention Cholesterol and Triglycerides which cause heart attacks and strokes if ingested in large quantities. So to each His own.

Some of the longest living people in the world are the Okinawians. Japanese who live on the island of Okinawa. Their diet is very good with great amounts of vegtables, rice and fish. Very little red meat if any.

as with evry food its the moderation that counts you can eat meat and have no problems venison is a red meat yet is healthier to eat than many others as it is naturally lean with loads of iron and other vitamins and proteins just mix it ie red today white tommorow fish day after etc etc its all about the way you eat it too dont fry grill and trim excess fat after cooking that way its cooked in its own juices and not in added ones and i must add that there are strict regulations as to animals that have taken antibiotics etc they must have a resting period before they can be used for human consumption and are checked and inspected for this at slaughter so that no trace of the antibiotic is still in the animals system i know i work for the meat hygiene service and this is part of our job to do independent checks for the government to make sure of compliance with the regs and this is daily hourly etc no animals that have traces of drugs are allowed into the human food chain when slaughtered thats in the uk mind dont know about elsewhere

Lots of responses have made good points about meat being good.
Read the Bible. God put split-hooved animals on the Earth to be eaten. (that's cows, deer, etc.)
I eat meat every day and I think the cigarettes are doing worse for me.

In moderation its great. Very nutrient dense. Unfortunately, it brings with it plenty of fat and cholersterol. Eat small portions, and only eat it a few times a week, at most.

It is not good to eat it every day, but it is the only source of vitamin B12, and without any, you can get pernicious anemia.
Once or twice a week is ample.
