it's how they communicate, just like dogs bark and you talk. was that a serious question?

From "Calling All Pets" I learned that the meow is actually a call of distress or a call for help, such as when a cat is really hungry, or stressed, or maybe even very lonely.
The purrr is the sign of contentment.
