Since I can remember, my mom has been boiling weiners with the plastic on. It was just recently that I made them and my fiance thought that it was strange that I left the plastic on. So I thought I would see what the masses had to say.
Any particular reasons why not to leave the plastic covering on?

LMAO at the person who thought I meant the whole package. I am referring to the individual plastic coverings on the weiners.

If you are talking about the hot dogs that come individually wrapped yes I cook them with the plastic on,until the plastic pops, then you know they are done.

Neither. You should always invest in a steamer and steam your hotdogs without the plastic cover. When you boil them all the flavor and juices run out into the boiling water. If you left the plastic cover on, the hotdogs wouldn't have room to expand in the vacuum-sealed package.
** If you're going to steam some weiners, I highly suggest you choose a quality frank that has NO BI-PRODUCTS, and is 100% beef. Makes a world of difference in flavor. (Why do you think Chicago is famous for their hotdogs?) A good brand to try is Vienna Beef Franks.

Without. I have never heard of boiling with the plastic on. I think one reason to NOT use the plastic is due to the emissions that would be released from the plastic during cooking.

Uhhh....I only eat one or two hot dogs at a time, so boiling the whole 8 or 10 pack in the plastic would not be an option.
Anyway, I put them in the microwave.

I have always boiled them without the plastic, but I can remember my grandfather trying to make them without splitting and boiled them with tape lmao so I don't think you can do any worse then he did.

take off the plastic covering, the wiener will stay in one piece while boiling, and make doubly sure to take off the plastic cover before roasting over an open flame or grilling over hot coals.
