You can bury them. Running water works. Setting them in salt works.
It is really a matter of personal preference. There are some things you may not want salt or water to touch depending what they are made of.

I found that salt works the best. Depending on th size of the tool, you can bury it in a bowl of salt, and leave it alone for a couple of days. If it's a bigger tool, make up a bit of holy water (basically a pinch of salt and a good amount of water mixed together with pure energy drawn into it.), clean the tool with that, then smudge it with smoke from white sage. That should purify your tools.
Just make sure that you use sea salt, since sea salt hasn't been altered by chemicals that the human body needs like iodine. And dry off your tools of the salt or holy water, or otherwise the tool will corrode (if it's metal).

Those methods work well, but your tools may run the risk of possibly becoming a bit rusty.
You can also try burying them in salt, leaving them in direct sunlight for 2 or 3 days, or else doing the opposite - using moonlight instead. You can also try smudging them or using a 'singing' bowl to cleanse them of any negativity.
I would also recommend some sort of cleansing ritual prayer in your own words.

There are actually a few methods you can use but the one I like the best is to sprinkle them with salt water (Earth and Water), run them through a flame (unless they are made of a flammable material like wood...that would be Fire), run them through incense or sage smoke (Fire & Air), and then sleep with the tool either under your pillow if possible or at least somewhere near the head of your bed (Spirit). That way the tool is consecrated by all five elements: Earth, Water, Air, Fire, and Spirit.

I cleanse them with spring water that has had sea salt added (also the ingredients of "holy water"), that takes care of the water and earth elements. Then pass through incense (preferably Frankincense), this takes care of air element. Lastly pass through a burning candle. This takes care of the fire element. You then have to CONSECRATE the tools for use.
Good luck.

I say do whatever YOU feel cleanses them the best. I personally present the tool to all the corners and elements (in a Circle) and breathe on it, touch it to my heart and third eye and ask the God and Goddess to bless the creature of the art in my hands.

if water will not harm them,
place them in a glass bowl of salt water, and put them on a windowsill or somewhere that the sun and moon will shine on them. durring the full moon is preferable.
you could also smudge them..burn white sage, and fan the smoke ofer them with the intent that the smoke will absorb all negative energies and carry them away.
you could do both...
burying them in fertile soil will work too. (again best on the full moon.)
when doing your first ritual with them set aside time to "make them Yours" and to charge them.
it really is your preference,
Any other questions e-mail me...

edit,
if your Athme is made of carbon steel or any metal that will rust do not use the salt water, it will speed the rust.

There are many different ways to cleanse your tools. I was taught to sage them while speaking a spell.

I usually cleanse mine using something to represent each of the elements. Salt = Earth, Incense = air, candle = fire, and Water.
Peace.

Bathe in water if they won't rust or otherwise get ruined, salt if they would.
State out loud, simply, "I dedicate this tool for my use. I dedicate this tool for the Gods," three times, or come up with another dedication for your tools.
