I know a few women who have a Sapphire as their center stone on their engagement rings. Is there a signficance to this?

There's an interesting article about engagement ring options here:

http://jewelry.about.com/cs/engagementtrends/a/stone_options.htm

What I take out of this is that sapphires come in all different kinds of colors, and that they are less expensive than real diamonds (while still being a real gemstone instead of a "fake" diamond).

What isn't mentioned in this article is the controversy over "blood diamonds" (aka "conflict diamonds"), where diamonds are used in Africa to finance terrible war crimes. You can read about this here:

So, it could be financial, political or simply a greater acceptance of going non-traditional.

Blue Sapphire Engagement Rings Meaning

1) If you decide later you'd prefer a diamond, you guys can have the stone replaced (and made into another ring) or get a whole new ring. 2) If sapphire (September) or pearl (June) are your birthstone, go with that one. 3) If sapphire or pearl are the month's stone of your wedding date/engagement date/anniversary etc, pick that. 4) keep in mind that sapphire is rated 9/10 on the mohs scale so it will be very durable, but a pearl is only a 2.5-4.5/10 so it can be damaged easily.

Everyone who says no to this question is wrong, even if the only reason were because my wife's engagement ring is a very beautiful sapphire. Several resources explain how sapphire is one of the Love Stones, as well as power and healing. And being her birthstone made it more special, personal, and original than a dumb ol diamond. It may be a bit cheaper but that extra money was well spent in Jamaica after the wedding!

A symbol of the eternal love and togetherness, sapphire engagement ring is one of the favorite engagement rings of the couple’s today. Sapphires are a part of the Corundum family, and they are considered second in hardness to diamonds.

Sapphires are a symbol of faithfulness, beauty an exquisiteness that makes them a ready choice for engagement rings.

My engagement ring is a medium blue Sapphire heart made and bought from India, Europe. Where best cut and found sapphires are to be found. He knows my tastes and knows it very well.

Now, I don't know why people are saying it is cheaper when mine sure wasn't. My fiance paid a little over $1,100 U.S dollars direct to the company as he was stationed in Japan over the summer. However, this ring is appraised a little over $3,000, towards $4,000 US dollars if bought in U.S. I don't find that "cheap" as I always see engagements diamond rings between $400-$999 all the time.

Significance:

I love sapphires. I am not much of a traditional diamond girl. A good 90% of my Jewelery is Sapphire.

It is also my birthstone (September 21st b-day)

Sapphire is a beautiful shade of blue and it appeals to me more than any other color.

Symbol of our eternal love and going to be together. He is my first love, my first boyfriend, first break up, best friend, high school sweet heart. I mean, he is my everything and he loves to make me happy as I do to. We have always been faithful and loyal and this ring signifies we are ready to make that commitment to each other.

I find it more elegant and unique. I love uniqueness! I like to have different and he sure did great on the design of the band to the ring itself.

The only significance I can think of is that they may not like diamonds or they really love sapphires so they want something different. Nothing wrong with that. When it comes down to it, a sapphire can easily be more expensive than a diamond so that argument is moot. Everyone has different tastes.

Royalty mostly use sapphire for the engagement ring. Like someone said, Princess Diana, Queen Elizabeth and many others.

Well, when the original engagement ring came out, thats what they used. But the reason they used it was becuz of the story behind it, Sapphire means eternal love
