Having an alcoholic beverage would not necessarily trigger a bi-polar event (either mania or depression) in and of itself. It's probably OK to have wine with dinner, for instance. But, a bi-polar that gets plowed is just asking for trouble. Any anti-depressant medication mixed with large amounts of alcohol could cause big problems. If I were bi-polar, I would avoid alcohol all together. It's just not worth it. Be a hero and be the designated driver instead.

i don't believe a person is ever in "remission" from being bipolar. that's like saying a diabetic person is not diabetic this week. bipolar can be controlled with meds ... but you are still bipolar.

i also believe that you shouldn't mix alcohol with any kind of mental health medicine ~ most of them have warnings on them to stay away from alcohol.

if a person is not on meds .. i don't think alcohol could "cause" a bipolar episode ~ however, since bipolar is a combination of being manic and severely depressed, using alcohol would exacerbate the depression.

there would be no good reason for any mental health patient to self-medicate with alcohol ever ... and that's all that would be doing.

Anything is possible. About 90% of bipolar persons have addiction problems. Alcohol can change your mood, but you may begin to take more and more to feel better. Stay away from ANY addictive substances. Try attending an AA group. Talk to your doctor and be good to yourself!

Bipolar disease is treatable with medications. Medications are never as effective and can have adverse effect when used with alcohol. You will always have to stay on your Meds if you have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. It will never go away, you will have to learn to live with it. In my opinion you should avoid alcohol and any other drugs altogether.

Good luck.

It depends on the person and how serious their Bipolar is.

I have Bipolar, was diagnosed at 11, and drinking doesn't cause me to have 'episodes'...

But it can. It really depends, as I said, on the person.
