EMCEE 101 ~
The Championship fights went from 15 to 12 rounds right after Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini knocked out Du Ku Kim in the 14th round of their fight on November 13th 1982. Kim died from injuries suffered in that fight. Sad day for the Kim family and a sad day for fight fans all around the world. The commissions thought that 12 rounds would be better than 15 thinking that the fighters would sustain less punishment. In my opinion, complete nonsense.
Thanks for the question EMCEE 101 hope this helped.

The number of rounds is decided by promoters and those involved with the contracting process. After about 12 rounds, they are spent, and the last 3 are useless. I have seen some 10 round fights too.
